We can never know what would've happened anyway. All we can know is that we're better off after 40 years of mainly Tory policy (including most of the policy during the Blair years) than we were before it.

A £53k+ salary, so a true champagne socialist. Why not put your money where your mouth is and up your tax bill to pay for public services by paying voluntary contributions?

A lot of that pay is out of hours and overtime. I work hard. I’m not a socialist and I don’t drink champagne but I’d happily pay more tax to support decent public services.

The IMF aren't infallible. Prior to 2008 they were the cheerleaders of the so called Greeespan consensus of slashing regulations, privatising and marketising, and failed to see the oncoming financial crash - as did many.

I think for myself thanks. You're just regurgitating other people's theories and views too. We believe what we choose to believe and form our own views. When views differ, one side is not somehow more intellectually superior, as the left try to espouse. They're just different views.

Spending your way out of austerity by adding more debt to the debt would've been even riskier. The IMF validated the UK's approach. Also what is so elitist? The top 10% pay even more proportionally than they did under Labour. The personal allowance on income tax has been raised substantially, meaning lower earners are out of paying tax.

Since you're so keen on the IMF as the great authority, you might want to listen to the fact that they recently said that Britain's public finances are worse that Kenya, Gambia and Uganda due to privatisation.

Nobody's stopping you. You can make voluntary additional NI contributions. Knock yourself out.

Well I don't like to be rude, so I think I'll just allow other people to form their own opinions on those things.

That's what we all do. That was my point. We read, listen and form our own opinions. They may differ but don't try to take the intellectual high ground. There's nothing clever about throwing money at something.

Maybe they don’t  because they don’t believe the government will support further expenditure and direct the money accordingly.

Are people with socialist principles not allowed to earn good incomes without derision then?

is that just reserved for the tories?

Can you point me to the instructions for making voluntary NI contributions please.

There is nothing stopping you from sending cheques to the government in order to pay more than your current allocated share however, as you said you're happy to do..

That's only to fill in gaps when you didn't pay NI in order to maximise your state pension - I'm going to pay 2 years contributions in 2020 and I'll get my money back by 2024.

Except I’m completely up to date with my NICs with no gaps. The cheque would be returned.

So I can’t pay extra NICs. And I can’t pay extra income tax.

So putting it in the nicest possible way: you’re talking complete rubbish

I’m sorry? What are you on about?

You asked for information about making voluntary NICs. I provided that information. I never said you could pay extra NIC above and beyond what you are allowed to pay. I also never said you could pay extra income tax.

I did say you could write a cheque to the government if you felt you weren’t paying enough tax however, and ask that it goes to the exchequer. That is a fact, indeed they have their own specific name - ‘patriotic gifts.’

So where is the rubbish?

Great interview from Tom Watson on Andrew Marr show yesterday.

But why is it him doing the talking? Why is Corbyn constantly sweeping the issues under the carpet?

The reason I asked wiseowl for the link is because he said I could make voluntary extra NICs. Then you jumped in - hence my reply which you took out of context to the discussion you gatecrashed.

Patriotic gifts are for national debt reduction. I’m hardly likely to send money to a Tory government for that after the mess they’ve caused with our national debt. They’d just waste it.

My preference would be for everybody to pay extra income tax and NICs to fund services.

Your barnpot NIC and patriotic gifts suggestions are not practical solutions to dealing with the Tory-manufactured crisis in our services.
