ccit   10 #4 Posted June 4, 2014 (edited) @NatureLover - people with respiratory problems such as asthma and COPD can be helped to a better quality of life by education and knowledge. Self help groups such as this one often provide a wealth of experience not only in their membership but in the professionals who are sometimes invited to speak.  These days there is the 'expert patient' who is usually someone that has acquired, from experience and study, a great deal of knowledge about their condition. They are well placed to help others, particularly the newly diagnosed. Medical staff can only go so far in their treatment.  In many chronic illnesses it is up to the patient to understand and manage their condition as best they can. Learning about it can literally save lives, particularly in the case of asthma which still results in fatalities even now that we have very effective treatment.  Nobody understands what it is like to live with an illness more than another person in the same situation. Clubs like this provide support and knowing that you are not the only one can help people to cope.
