I heard this on Radio 2 yesterday. I was surprised to hear that this operation first started in the 80's. I thought it was something new, due to the attention it was getting.

I saw a programme about a blind guy that had been successful all his life as a woodworker, he had an operation to allow him to see and he was so depressed about how dirty everything was and how much traffic there was that he died only a year or so later.
