As a total aside, went visiting mates in birmingham other month taxi driver got totally lost enroute so we told him to pull into next pub we found. Not sure bout posting links on here so search prince of wales in moseley, birmingham but its where we ended up. Smoking shelter is a venue in itself and one of the sheds is a cheese and pie shop, looks like the most unassuming pub from the outside, if it werent for chatting to one of the locals we'd have missed everything that was happening beyond the front bar area lol...if only we had that round here

No, the Chesterfield Alehouse, opened towards the end of last year on West Bars - http://www.chesterfieldalehouse.co.uk/

Its a small converted shop unit that specialises in real ale and artisan cider.

There is also the Beer Parlour at Whittington Moor that has just moved to slightly bigger premises to cope with demand.

"Artisan cider"? What the **** is that?

I keep thinking that in the suburbs, especially suburban shopping centres like Hillsborough, where a Tesco Express/Sainsburys Local has opened and a nearby Spar type shop has then closed down, that closed shop unit could be spot on for a micro-pub...

The product range served in the micropub I have in mind would be:

- real ale

- traditional cider & perry

- imported bottled beers

- single serve bottle wines

- soft drinks

- coffee

- pork pies

- cheese boards

- cold meat platters

- crisps and nuts

- newspapers

Everything available to enjoy both on the premises or to take away

This sort of thing started happening about 15-20 years ago in trendy suburbs like Chorlton in Manchester. Obviously in other European cities this kind of cafe/bar has always been there. Those with space at the front for an outdoor area work best.

Maybe Hillsborough could support at least one such place, same for Crookes, Woodseats and similar suburban shopping areas. I suppose Legends already is one. It's a very very bad example at present but not beyond redemption. Broomhill and Ecclesall Rd could easily support one.

There's this in Donny market place:

Only an off-sales license so far but should be a micropub this year I think.

If it got too popular as a concept I'd be worried there would be even more pressure to flog off all the 'proper' pubs though.

already has on-sales too. 3 keg fonts and three handpumps I think, about 20-odd bottles in the fridge, think you can drink any of the the 200+ bottles off the shelves on site too though

The Poets Corner has the Ashover Brewery in the stables adjoining the pub. It's a lovely friendly place with roaring log fires and real food realistically priced. It's in Ashover, between Chesterfield and Matlock.

Yes...real home made meat and tatty pie with lots of gravy and Henderson's relish. I think it was around £6 for a hearty portion.
