Sheffield's Green Party Councillors are proposing a citywide referendum on a small increase in Council Tax (less than 50p a week for most households) in order to save libraries and help elderly and vulnerable people. What do you think?

How much would an extra 50p per week raise?

Nice idea in theory but suspect the overall amount would just get hoovered up and wasted. Might be worth it to pay for a specific project(s).

Why not collect the £31M in unpaid council tax instead?

That's a much better idea.. after they've got that in then they can talk about putting it up...

Collecting the unpaid tax is a good idea but easier said than done. Here's what the Greens want to spend it on. Saving the libraries, help for the poorest residents affected by the changes to Council Tax benefit and reversing some of the worst cuts to care for the elderly/disabled.

Yeah...far easier to put the price up for those who already pay isn't it?

Wow that £3.5 million seems to be going a very long way - which it needs to as that 50p a day (or £15 a month) could mean quite a difference to those who are currently struggling.

It's not 50p a day - it's less than 50p a week that would bring in a useful sum for these services.
