Sometimes when someone yawns, I have to yawn in a response.

I think it's something to do about us all originating from being in a pack (of animals), so when it is time to sleep we send the signal out that the rest of the herd should sleep too and we all wind down together and rest together.

I remember learning about this on a nature programme years ago.

Yawning is indeed catching, soon as one person yawns another follows suit, kinda like a Mexican yawn. Is the same with coughing during public entertainment, such as cinema, theatre or gigs. As soon as one person coughs everyone else joins in! Its okay theyve just coughed now so can I!!!

Definately. If I see someone driving past me and they're yawning that makes me yawn. Then I wonder if I set someone else off. I wonder how far an infectious yawn can travel? :)

I remember seeing something about the fact that it is a learned behaviour.

A baby will yawn and make everyone else yawn, but you cannot get a baby to yawn unless they have to.

It isn't until later that they develop the automatic reaction to people nearby yawning...aparently.

saying that I remember my son was like that, and it was wierd he didn't catch it
