1917:  8/10  

 

This film follows the mission of one man who is destined to travel through enemy lines to get a message to another battalion to halt their advance, because the German's have set up an ambush and a slaughter will ensue.  To make it even more interesting, the man's brother is in the other battalion which is planning the advance, so he has a personal reason to want to get there, in addition to a sense of duty.  

 

You'll have to watch the film yourself if you want to find out what happens to him along the way and whether he makes it.  What I would say is that it's an interesting journey!  

 

The producer of the film, Sam Mendes, has based this on a story told to him by one of his forefathers who fought in the war.  So it is a dramatisation of what may represent a real event.  I didn't realise that until the credits came up at the end, but I found that very poignant.  Of course, there are many such stories like this, of bravery and human spirit that went beyond endeavour.

 

I think they capture the story beautifully and I found the film really engaging.  I also appreciated the cinematography which was very realistic and gave a sense of actually being there as someone has already said.  I also appreciated that there was a strong story line to it and not just a load of noises and special effects, which in my view, is what a lot of modern films amount to these days.  Poor story lines but big on noise and special effects.  

 

My criticism of this film would be that it is a very myopic, one-dimensional, film.  There are no "side-stories" to it, nothing going on around the main action.   It's a very simplistic plot really, which is all about, "can he make it?".  The other thing I did not like at all, was the abundance of London accents.  For the first hour of the film every soldier was speaking in a London accent.  I was beginning to wonder if it was only people from London that fought in the war?  

 

Altogether though, a very engaging film and would definitely recommend.

Knives Out   7/10

 

If you like a murder mystery 'who done it' type of film, then this one is for you.

 

It has a stellar cast including Daniel Craig, Jamie Lee Curtis and Mike Shannon. It was good to see Don Johnson, still looks smooth the sonofagun.

1917 - Good, modern version of 'All quiet on the Western front' (ish)

could anyone ever capture or want to capture the real horrors of WW1 though?

Dr Dolittle - some have slated it, We couldn't fault the innocent humour that 

flowed through the film without resorting to the usual crudeness masquerading as Humour.

This is one the family can watch.

Only downside no Giant Pink Sea snail

Once Upon a Time ... in Hollywood
Like Brad Pitt but here both he and DiCaprio portray fairly unlikable characters and Tarantino overdoes the retro thing. Surprised it's an oscar contender. 6/10

Requiem for a Dream   9/10

 

Incredible film. Its a brutal, honest and mesmerising story of drug addiction. The acting is great by all the lead characters, but Ellyn Burnstyn is just fantastic.

1917- 7/10. Showed fairly well the horrors they went through, especially going through no man's land. Probably not one I'd watch again but worth a watch.

 

Bad boys for life- 8/10. A good addition and hopefully do one last one to finish it off.

I'm not their target audience, but even so it was an enjoyable hour & a half. Very Spice Girls/'girl-power'. Some genuinely shocking violent scenes. Marvellous soundtrack (apart from whichever losers ruined 'Black Betty'). While it's Margot Robbie who sucks you in as the star, the most enjoyable role fell to the oldest actress involved, Rosie Perez.

More importantly, it's funny. That's the selling point. 

 

Will go see it again next week.

'The Gentleman'. Guy Ritchie carries on with a film very similar in style and presentation to 'Lock, Stock...' and 'Rock 'N' Rolla'. You liked them, you'll like this. Nice layers, and VERY funny.
Only issue; Michelle Dockery was perhaps slightly underused. Hugh Grant and Colin Farrell supported admirably. Bet Matthew McConaughey was rubbing his hands with glee when he read the script.

Beloved and I have just returned from ‘The Invisible Man’. Totally freaked her out. Really scared her. It was tense, but the kind of film you can only ever see once. 
The ‘jumps’ are the best bits, but any subsequent viewings would be diluted by knowing how it plays out.

But go-see, peeps.

"Greed"

Not the lol film I'd been expecting,  but kept me awake (which isn't always the case when I've enjoyed a glass or two of vino  before).   For the most part enjoyable, but didn't like the preachy bits at the end.   In summary... entertaining.
