Annoying Hive ad on TV

Recommended Posts

What if you left home for the day and forgot to turn off the heating?

Mines on a programmable controller so it turns itself off at 9am.

Some people do not come and go from their homes on regular intervals so control their heating when they need it. You may not have a need for it, but others could find it useful.

It's a good idea and it will get better (not sure if it already does ) but based on your phone's GPS it could know when you are coming home so it could automatically switch the heating on, knows when you have gone out so switches it off in case you forgot, can take into account the external weather. All sorts of other clever stuff.

Indeed, sounds like a great idea.

I've been waiting for the Nest one to be released in the UK, may take a look at Hive though.

Haven't seen the advert.

Its all part of the automation and control from anywhere technology that is starting to appear. Hue bulbs look pretty good too http://www.meethue.com/en-GB

There was a beardy fella on Tomorrow's World, Bob Symes.

He once demonstrated a little gadget he had that did this. His home was run by a BBC Micro and he dialled home from a public phone box and pressed certain combinations on a little keypad and it turned on his heating, his oven, the lights and even closed the curtains!

Home automation has been around for years, but its been out of the reach of us mere mortals.

Not really difficult to do yourself using a arduino and/or raspberry pi. A lot cheaper too and with your existing setup.

Not really that much cheaper as you need buy a Pi, and Arduino board and then something to give it wireless capability that's probably a hundred pound plus you need to be beyond IT literate and also need to leave your computer on all day every day.

Pi about £40

Arduino board starter kit £80

wireless usb £8

case £unsure

Then you need to have extra wires going to the device to power the pi.

£199 for a hive installed by a professional.

I know what I would buy.

Well you wouldn't need the Arduino board and the cheaper Raspberry Pi model would do the job. You could get all the bits, including a power supply for the Pi, for £50.

The real problem, as Supertramp hinted at, is knowing what to do.
