Norton 360 wont start after Shutdown but will on a Restart

Recommended Posts

Norton 360 v5 (I think) is loaded on a laptop running Windows 8.1. If the laptop is closed down using the 'Shut Down' option then Norton will not start when the laptop is next fired up. If you then run 'Restart' after the laptop is running Norton then opens OK.

Norton will start from cold after a 'Hibernate' close down.

I have reinstalled Norton 360 twice and the scanning program cannot find anything wrong with the installation.

Any helpful suggestions welcome but please don't just fall back on the "remove Norton and install something else" response - at this stage at least.

Thanks

It seems you already know the solution so I won't repeat it!

Did you disable the Microsoft protection that is built into windows 8? They may be conflicting if both are trying to run.

Also ditch norton and stick with mse.

Have you tried removing it with the removal tool and reinstalling? Might be worth a try.

As has been said, make sure that Defender is switched off. There is a Norton forum here and it might be useful if you were to ask about the problem on there. Other than that, a previous poster mentioned support so perhaps consider emailing or telephoning them.

Persevere and hopefully you will find the solution. Maybe disregard comments about free anti virus too. You have a better product and it's well worth the cost considering the increasing security risks.

Thanks for all the suggestions. Contacted the Norton Helpline and after quite a lot of to-ing and fro-ing and seven restarts they used an "experts toolbox" programme to fix things and it all seems to be working OK.

For those using MSE I've heard that support for this will cease at the same time that support for Windows XP ends in April 2014. Might be worth checking this out.

Can you point out the relevant bit as i can't see owt scan reading it ?

MSE has already morphed into Windows Defender in Win 8 btw. Can't see them dropping it any time soon.

Mse isn't going anywhere, you just won't be able to download it or update it FOR WINDOWS XP, mse will continue to be as normal for any other ms os.

There was a news piece from Microsoft a couple of days ago saying they'll keep updating the definitions on MSE for another year...
