mjw47   10 #2 Posted December 31, 2013 Well I'm Anglo-Irish, & my view is that it's about time both sides in that benighted place gave some thought to the future of their children & less thought to ancient, or even recent, wrongs.  To be arguing over which bloody flag can fly, & who can parade down what road in this day & age is beyond ludicrous.  One of the problems is that the so called 'loyalist' side had so many years imposing their wishes on the area that they can't accept democratic decisions.  The recent flag protests in Belfast are a case in point. The Union flag used to fly 365 days of the year over Belfast Town Hall. That doesn't happen in any City in Britain.  Nationalists are now in the majority in Belfast. A vote was taken which resulted in the decision to fly the Union flag on the same days as elsewhere in the UK.  The 'loyalists' took this as a personal affront & rioted, causing injury to police & damage to property.  This ongoing nonsense has to be brought to an end. The UK is subsidizing NI to the tune of £12 billion a year. Harsh words need to be spoken & ultimatums issued.
 Share this content via...

mjw47   10 #4 Posted January 1, 2014 They should put a video screen on the roof displaying all the flags on continuous loop with equal time for each then they can't whinge  Like your style, but believe me, they would still find a problem. This won't be sorted until it has been established beyond doubt, that one side has ultimately come out on top.  There is only one solution to this problem. As unfortunate/fortunate as it may be, the only final solution is to remove all hope from one side in the disagreement.  There is only one side that all hope can be removed from. The UK will not be stupid enough to re -invade Ireland. Lesson learned there.  So, so called loyalists, game over.  If the the current demographics continue as they are ,the nationalist population will be in the majority by 2020.  It will take at least 10, or even 20 years after that before a referendum will approve a United Ireland, but it is inevitable.  If the so called loyalists had any sense whatsoever, they would try to make some kind of peace with the nationalist community. Going on past performance however, they won't, so what goes, around comes around.
 Share this content via...
Andy   10 #5 Posted January 1, 2014 They shouldn't be called loyalists. They are not showing loyalty to Britain or to the Crown by rioting, fighting and injuring British police officers.  The Queen should tell Belfast Town Hall that they cannot fly her flag at all, until they all learn to grow up and act like British Citizens.
