Does your TV have a VGA input? (most HD TVs do). If so you can use a standard monitor cable between the VGA out on your laptop and the VGA in on the TV. Switch the TV source to PC and the Laptop should display on the TV.

Totally irrelevant.

All the op needs to do is connect their laptop to the tv via an HDMI cable.

actually some of it relevant.

if the op didn't have a HD TV but instead old CRT then HDMI is useless unless spend money on a convertor.

also you make assumption that op has HDMI out on laptop, not every laptop has

Personally I primarily use a WDTV Live. I would recommend a WDTV Play as its a faster/cheaper unit and both are far more power efficient and more living room friendly than most other devices. If you have an iPhone then an Apple TV probably makes more sense however as its the only thing compatible with your videos purchased on there.

As already mentioned you CAN use a PC/laptop but I think only the Windows 8 app supports full HD and its far more cumbersome than a dedicated box.

There is always the option of PS3,PS4 or Wii U too, or even the normal Wii if you aren't bothered about HD, but they all use a LOT more electricity than the WDTV boxes and the fan noise can be distracting.
