anywebsite   10 #145 Posted April 27, 2014 (edited) If you've installed OpenWRT or similar on your router & made sure to secure it, then you can possibly stop worrying that your router is owned by the manufacturer/isp/intelligence agency/random hacker on the internet (or in your neighbourhood). The majority of people don't even change the default password on their ISP supplied router. If it's not ISP supplied then you're even less likely to get any software updates for your router, putting it in a similar situation to running any other outdated OS without updates. You always have to assume the worst & try to protect against it, with security.  https://technet.microsoft.com/en-US/library/security/2963983  Better stop using Internet Explorer, XP holdouts.  Any public computer shouldn't be able to store anything for long, like the PCs in a shop. If libraries aren't doing that there's more to worry about on their computers than XP. If they are following standard practice then it mitigates their risk a bit, but either way you should never trust any information you want to keep private (website logins, card details...) to a public computer.
