Iv never gotten really why maybe because it is all before my time...I just see now that the north and Sheffield really doesn't produce anything new... Â Of course it needs to be mined - where do think the Iron comes from to make the steel?
 Share this content via...

Bob England   11 #89 Posted February 24, 2014 Sheffield Steel is alive and kicking. TATA Speciality Steels Stocksbridge, Rotherham, Thrybergh & Brinsworth  Quality steels sold all over the world for making specialist products like parts for Aeroplanes Workforce is small compared to what it used to be though. Automation has played it's part in reducing manning for the sake of costs and Health and Safety.  Are you sure its alive and kicking? Is it not more of an involuntary twitch? trastrick   866 #90 Posted February 24, 2014 (edited) Why did the steel works go under? down to two people. The witch Margaret Thatcher and her American friend Magregor  I can't believe some people still believe this myth.  Sheffield steel died in the late fifties. I know, I worked at most of the big mills. It was a contributing reason I left Sheffield for Canada.  At that time, nobody had ever heard of Margaret Thatcher.  (IThe constant nationalization/de-nationalization, then re- nationalization/de-nationalization circus, had a lot to do with it)  Look it up! geared   268 #91 Posted February 24, 2014 Look it up!  That would involve putting some thought into what they say. Just blame Thatcher regardless, it's much easier.  "The economy is in the toilet - Thatcher's fault" "Immigrants are taking all our jobs - Thatchers fault" "Our citys run by incompetent moneywasters - Thatchers fault" "I overslept this morning - Thatchers fault" "My dinner is overcooked - Thatchers fault"
 Share this content via...

Ten years ago I was paying £ 40 a week into the pension scheme. Sounds like a bit of jealousy there. Rsol ? Quite.
 Share this content via...
Bob England   11 #93 Posted February 25, 2014 shouldnt companies look after its employees then  Yes, but its a two way street mate, and if what the guy says about employees shirking is true then the answer to the question why did the steelworks go down is weak management and idle workers.  ---------- Post added 25-02-2014 at 14:15 ----------  I can't believe some people still believe this myth. Sheffield steel died in the late fifties. Not so. I was a maintenance worker. Did the lot, 3 shifts, 12 hours days and nights, continental shifts. Was proud to be a steel worker and am lucky to have a comfortable retirement. My pay and conditions were thanks to the Unions, but over my thirty odd years the decline was obvious.
 Share this content via...
actionman   12 #96 Posted February 25, 2014 But it is increasingly expensive to mine as all the easily reached stuff has already been collected.  Send the immigrants in to mine it on a living wage.
 Share this content via...
