darra   10 #73 Posted February 22, 2014 Lets not forget that the steel industries in other companies were heavily subsidised meaning they could produce cheaper steel. Also countries like India can pay their workers very little and have to spend little or nothing on Health and safety meaning less production costs. Our governments are and were short sighted as shown in this government's refusal to loan Forgemasters £80 million to invest in a process which would have made much more money for the company and the country As for the unions asking for more pay and less hours many were just looking for parity with our European neighbours who typically worked a 35 hour week compared to our 40 and generally for more pay. Also countries like Germany rewarded workers for doing overtime by taxing overtime pay at a lesser rate making it worthwhile
 Share this content via...

GLASGOWOODS Â Â 10 #75 Posted February 22, 2014 An interesting programme on tv last night about the steel industry (amongst other things) in China. Very few companies make a profit, and by the sounds of it they may have to streamline their operations at some point and lay off thousands. Snowglobe   10 #79 Posted February 22, 2014 Sheffield Steel is alive and kicking. TATA Speciality Steels Stocksbridge, Rotherham, Thrybergh & Brinsworth  Quality steels sold all over the world for making specialist products like parts for Aeroplanes Workforce is small compared to what it used to be though. Automation has played it's part in reducing manning for the sake of costs and Health and Safety.
 Share this content via...

Falls   10 #82 Posted February 23, 2014 (edited) Hello,  I've been reading this topic but nobody seems to have mentioned the "Rise and Fall" of Tinsley Park Works (TPW).  Now there was tragedy if ever there was one. Opened in 1963 as a supposedly " State of the Art" Facility. It lasted less than 20 years.  Some parts of the works definitely had up-to date technology while the rest was built to very old design concepts. In the late 1950s, there were radical changes in the way steel mills were laid-out/arranged but TPW incorporated very few of these.  Regards Edited February 25, 2014 by Falls
 Share this content via...
rsol   10 #83 Posted February 23, 2014 (edited) Brinsworth Mill is still operating. Owned by Tata. I worked there for 30 years and enjoyed my time there. Retired 9 years ago with a decent pension. Mainly thanks to the "awful" unions. I play golf with a lot ex steels men and 90% of them say what a cushy number they had never worked a full shift on nights some even went out on the town. Plus they got a very big pay out and pension when they was made redundant . plus they can rent a bungalow from the company for peanuts at Brinsworth  ---------- Post added 23-02-2014 at 15:05 ----------  Brinsworth Mill is still operating.
