Don't quote me on it but i believe Sheffield still makes as much steel as ever, it just takes a lot less people. Maybe someone more knowledgeable can confirm.

Sheffield still produces lots of steel. It's concentrates on specialist steel parts, like components for the aerospace industry rather than mass produced steel. As an other poster has said we can't compete on price, but we can compete on quality and expertise. Also like a lot of industrialised production in the west, a lot of the steel production in Sheffield is automated.

One word... And she died back in April! ;)

Thats the biggest crap ever spoken.

I've never worked since in such an industry ruled by nepotism, unions, demarkation and outright bone idleness.

Agree. Madge knocked a lot of lazy overpaid nuts together whilst totally streamlining industry.

The rampant nationalization of the 40s, and the ongoing threat of re-nationalization spelled the end of major investment in infrastructure, productivity, and competitive viability, long before Maggie came along.

Nobody polishes a rented car, or remodels a government flat.

too many overpaid people asleep on the job in nationalised industries. down the pits, british leyland.... unions holding the country to ransom making british goods too expensive to buy and resources too expensive to mine. the oil refinery in scotland is another case in point. unions striking for more pay when the cost of the produce is twice the imported cost. dont know why they are keeping it open.
