Strike action Living Wage

Recommended Posts

So another pointless strike by our lecturers in Sheffield today. They are unhappy that although they have a very cushty job doing very little actual work. They would like to be paid a living wage!

So while cleaners and shop assistants work their rear ends off for very little money we have to now think about paying these people more money. Do they not live in the real world we cannot afford it.

I wasn't aware a lecturer was paid below the 'living wage'???

They still have to mark work and stuff don't they, and create lesson plans - so it's pretty much the same job/stress as a teacher.

Might depend on where the job is tho, some positions might be less work than others.

You do realise a university doesn't just employ lecturers? Supporting the teaching activities are an army of technicians, librarians, admin staff, cleaners, porters, security guards…

All three unions representing all pay grades are striking and it's a national strike, not just in Sheffield.

News to me. The BBC headlines this morning were on the helicopter crash, the RBS bank fault, Romanian immigrants, and Tom Daley, with a very small bit about some trouble in Eastern Europe.

ETA: Found this, the BBC posted it an hour ago:

University staff in second strike over 1% pay offer

Still cant see the point of holding the universitys to ransome. Theres not enough money as it is. Students will soon be complaining when their fees go up to pay for this living wage.

What is wrong with being paid a living wage? Some of the cleaners, porters and security staff I know are paid very little relative to the VC who is on £300 plus K a year - some have even had their hours cut and their shifts patterns altered this year, so they cannot earn over time, which has cut their income markedly.

If it includes Sheffield college staff too, then you should support the strike. Soon they will introduce a pay by results wage for teachers that are already not being paid as much as school teachers and have not had any pay rises.

The money saved from this has gone towards college heads in bonuses.

Obviously the op has no idea what it is like in that line of work, what it involves, hours, the work they do etc etc. It's just another rubbish post from an ignoramus.
