The New Moor Market

Recommended Posts

been round the new markets today having been in the old one many many times for fresh fish and fuit n veg etc

the new one seems fine, there is NOT an array of mobile shops n stalls or a lack of a bakers as people have previously stated, the variety is at least equal to old markets.

people are just against change, this market is clean and far more hygenic, easy to get to and at the end of the day the stalls and product it sells are down to the public ie supply and demand and judging by the footfall and early sucess they must have got it pretty much spot on.

i'm sure in the coming months a few stalls will change etc but at least sheffield now has a bespoke indoor market that's up to modern day standards.

as others have put it but less blunty if you don't like it fine go back to your waitrose and m&s etc, some of us enjoy a bit of charecter and diversity in or life not just the same old chain of shops

I went to the new market for the first time today and was amazed at the number of empty, unoccupied units, one of which I would love to set up but have been told that the waiting list is too long.

After leaving the city centre I had my haircut in Hillsborough and the market came up in conversation. According to my self employed stylist the rents on the market units are scarily high and the new butchers next to Barkers Pool (prime central location) is operated at a lower rent rate than the scabby market at the bottom of town in what has always been a dump of an area. Nice one Sheffield council.

I like how it turned from the new market you would like to set up in to the scabby market...

Don't kid yourself.

If the market had been any good in the first place then I would have loved a pitch, that's why I went. The business model I have in mind wouldn't sell to the present demographic, never mind the one that will inevitably take it over.

Castle Market it will never be.

Does it now satisfy customer needs and open 7 days a week?

Imagine having a market to buy food from that was still open when you finish work. That would be a super market

Afraid its a negative responce from me re: The New Moor Market.....been in twice since it opened and in all honesty was glad to get out.

The building in itself is ok but it lacks the feeling the old Castle market use to give whilst shopping there, the old Market was a place I use to go on a regular basis with my nan when I was a young lad......way back from the back end of the 1950's right up to the point of its closure.

Being a regular customer to the majority of the stallholders, you get to know them and build up a rapport with them.... unfortunately, some of the stallholders haven't transferred to the new market, so what friendships you have formed have now become lost.

Take away what few meat stalls are in the new market and the stalls selling jackets and coats

and there wouldn't be anything worth going in for......OK its warm and brightly lit but that's all that can be said about it in my opinion.

Another thing, if you happen to park in the carpark at the bottom of Dixon lane, you have further to walk in order to get to what was regarded as being the ' Meat Market ' its a trail to say the least.

What about the people who have for many years had stalls in the old market and due to being unable to afford the rents in the new market have been put out of business ?

Apart from the car park bit.

This was said word for word in the fifties' when the old rag and tag moved into the castle market.

The butchers near Barkers Pool has slightly higher rent than the market but they felt the ability to open 7am to 7pm and on Sundays plus the extra floor space was worth the extra. Good for them I say taking the opportunity to expand their business, bringing new jobs to Sheffield and providing a new service for the area where quite a lot of people live. I'm not sure this reflects badly on the market, except to say expanded opening hours on even just one week day would bring a lot of new customers into the market.

my watch had stopped, thinking I needed a new battery I went to a jewellers in the new market, the lady assistant took it off me and murmured something, took out an eye glass and looked at it closely for several seconds, smiled at me and said " You don,t need a new battery love, the winder was out that's all" Now she could have put a battery in my watch and I wouldn,t have been any the wiser, but I can guarantee she will have my custom in the future.

I've been in there today. It's nice and airy. The high ceiling does make it more spacious in feeling. I like it ! :) There are still some smells from the fish and meat stalls. But overall, I do like how the market really is, and it kind of complements the other few stalls outside too. Let's put it this way, I was able to do my weekly shop, and check out some DIY bits and bobs, all in a central location, so I'm happy about that. The price of the fish is still a bit expensive though.. salmon is at 12 pounds/kg ? Mmm.....

I got 2 big potatoes for 40p ! I had to stop and think for a moment, how much I normally spend on a measly bag of potatoes, or carrots from Tesco, M&S or Waitrose. When I think back to how much I used to spend, I am shocked at how great the pricing is for fruit and veg. I will definitely go there more often. Also, I got 30 eggs for 2 pounds ! Bargain. :D Looking forward to baking with them. Yumm..... I really like the egg stall, as it also give you choices of speciality eggs and so forth. It's quite nice to see this kind of artisan choice really. There is also a specialist tea shop too !

I've also checked out these too. TJ Hughes, Poundland & Iceland. TJ Hughes is going to compete with Atkinson's on their cosmetics. I was very very impressed by their cosmetic counters and the products that they are selling. I know that TJ Hughes is actually an American chain, and that is why they are able to source some of the American products for sale at a lower price. Atkinson always had decent pricing on their cosmetics, Bodycare and so forth, and this was before Bodycare appeared in the Moor, beating Boots in pricing and some choices too. Poundland, I always liked Poundland for those mundane items which is charged very high in supermarkets, but in actual fact, its value and worth is very low. They are good for items like micro-fibre cloths, dish washer sponges, and so forth. I'm not keen on Iceland. It is trying to be another Poundland offering all their items to be around a pound or so. What is the point of this place when the fresh food market is next door ?

It would be nice to see more of like artisan places popping up. Whether it is a decent baker with artisan bread, or a wine specialist. Or a cloth alteration place or other? Where people can drop off shirts or trousers or skirts to be shortened or lengthened etc. The quality of some of the stuff is okay, but the pricing is a little bit high. For example, the fish prices I know is more or less average supermarket prices, but won't they get more business if they just undercut them a little bit, and actually have a kind of "specials" each week or other? So that it attracts people to come and check what is on offer. I thought that the whole point of a market is to get things at actual trade price, or buy what is available and on supply only. It would be nice if there is also a kind of auction too like in Birmingham market, where they sell off stock which they cannot keep over the weekend or other, and therefore they auction it off, but still kind of make the trade price. I am sure that this kind of trading fun makes the market more vibrant. I mean, as silly as it sounds, but I wouldn't mind buying bulk chicken wing for cheap. :)

The fish, meat, fruit & veg, at least from some of the stalls, seem much better quality than supermarket stuff. It seems fresher. Maybe it costs a bit more than some of the offers in some of the supermarkets, but you can just buy what you need & not get conned by 'buy 1 get 1 free' offers, etc. You get a wider choice too & don't get ripped off for more unusual things.

Turner's have decent bread, not sure why they need two stalls selling exactly the same, but they're OK. Sheaf Valley bakery from Castle Market are missed, they were great, the new market needs someone like them.

The pop up stall is an interesting idea, but all the ones I've seen were trying to charge ridiculous prices, don't care how artisan the bread is, it's not £5 a loaf.

Longer opening hours would be good, even if it was just until 6 it'd mean office workers could reserve stuff at lunchtime & collect it on their way home, like they can at Simmonite's.

I think it's good that they were able to make such a success of their stall in Castle Market that they can now run a larger shop & have more control over their business. I hope some of the other traders can do the same.
