derrickd   10 #37 Posted November 25, 2013 Calling these shops bookies, or betting shops is a misnomer,I have been refused bets or been offered restricted odds(average bet £50) because I win more often than I lose, yet if I want to put £1,000 in a FOBT there is no problem, that is because you cannot win on them (average take out of these machines is £8oo per week each!).These machines are now the easiest way to launder money made from the illegal drugs trade, put £500 in lose 40% go to the counter with your receipt collect your "winnings" and when picked up by police and asked "how do you explain this cash in your possession when you are unemployed" answer,"I have just won it in the bookies, here is my receipt". Maz3 Â Â 10 #39 Posted November 25, 2013 Is there actually any more gambling shops on Fitzallen square than there were 5 years ago? Â On Fitzalan Square alone there's a Coral, William Hill and a Betfred next door to each other, and Ladbrokes in the old Marples building. Can't see the council planners agreeing to that, which suggests they had no powers to stop them.
 Share this content via...

ECCOnoob   1,049 #42 Posted November 25, 2013 Why haven't this shambles of a government done anything to curb gambling?  Why should they. Dont people take responsibility for THEMSELVES any more??  Gambling is restricted to over 18s only. Gambling is restricted to licenced premises only. Gambling and the risks of such are heavilly publicised with warnings over every kind be in in person or online. Gambling addicts have access to support/therapy. Gambling in the UK has strict regulation and limitations compared to some of our, lets say, American Cousins.  What more do you expect them to do. Tie peoples hands together. Rob their wallet off them if they so much as approach a bookies??
 Share this content via...

There are hundreds of places to help people stop drinking, taking drugs etc, but only one place in the whole of England (in London) which helps people with problem gambling... I agree Matt there is not enough done to help gambling addicts. I remember my mum (bless her) and she said when she was growing up her dad had 2 jobs, this was mainly due to the fact that he'd gamble all his wages from the 1st & nan would try to stop him before he did the 2nd wage.  She said he'd bet on 2 flies walking up a wall. Bypassblade   10 #48 Posted November 25, 2013 Too right m8, there banned in Ireland...  Should be over here, now and again when nice I jump on the scooter and go to bookies for a 2 quid bet on Saturday footy, I'm amazed when I go in blokes just stood in front of them shoving coins in.  I remember years ago I went in Bob Holmes I think it was at Frecheville a bloke walked in and stuck 600 quid on a dog over the sticks.  It came to 1st hurdle and clipped it, from then on in it didn't stand a chance, he didn't bat an eyelid, I've have chucked misen under 1st 41 that came past.
