Have we got enough betting shops in Sheffiled

Recommended Posts

Now I'm not one from banning shops in the City Centre. But why do people think there is a market for so many betting shops here?

I know we have a lot of gamblers but it does seem a bit excessive.

Obviously people do like to gamble, I said to the wife I reckon it's only the purple rinse brigade that keeps the bingo halls going, and the die hards, as online bingo is rife now.

This is also the same with online betting shops, it's a slippery slope for some sadly.

Betting shop are making a fortune via casino type gaming machines, they are limited to how many machines they can have per shop so they just increase the number of shops in a given area and the local authority is idiotic enough to grant them permission.

Local Authorities don't have many powers to stop the spread of betting shops - and the current government seems more than happy.

It is thoroughly disgusting, as pointed out, the limit on machines per shop means they just open more and more shops. They clearly make so much money of the sad punters that they can. I genuinely believe the law should be changed. Bookies and offies should be far more restricted.

As has been said 3 FOBT's per shop hence the silly amount of shops popping up all over the place.

A friend of mine has been battling to get the machines banned like they are in Ireland or the stakes lowered considerably.

He's been on BBC breakfast the lot.

Have a look at this, it's his video diary "diary of a compulsive gambler"

I agree that banning them should be seriously considered, but I suppose Osborne is making plenty of dough from them.
