But then you guys are starting to talk about online marketing and branding, right ? Let's not confuse that with the actual site creation itself. It would be good if everyone actually differentiate and come to a good industrial standard.

To me, it sounds like the OP wants an online shop basically where he can control the contents. But does he know that Ebay is MASSIVE, and has a team behind it to upload and update its data and contents continually ? I'm sure he doesn't want a global multi-national company like that. Even though he stated "like Ebay" ????

I don't know if anyone has ever thought about this, but it is also good to put in a skeletal plan also of your online shop and its evolvement too. If I have learnt anything in my line of the industry of seeing companies grow and expand, it is the consideration of expansion plan is never in place, and that includes the infrastructure side and aspect too. i.e. how does the online shop get expanded, and how does the growth works out ? It should tie in with the growth plan of the business proposal before submission of the business plan.

There really is no point to just create a static one-off, especially if your business rely heavily on an online presence. You may as well cater for the expansion of your site.

You can't just ask a question like that and expect even a rough price.

You need to sit down and draft up the specification for exactly how it will work - every page, every function, etc.

Most designers won't sit down with someone and do this for free as you are likely to then go out and get more quotes, and go with the cheapest and not the one who put the hard work into working out the best spec for you. Just bear that in mind.

If the F word is involved, people also tend to bump up the price. Bear that in mind too.

You want quotes from people without mentioning funding, where you provide the spec, or if they draft it for you, it is YOUR responsibility to make sure that spec meets your requirements. Use a novice and they will try and give you a basic wordpress install and a couple of plugins which may not actually do what you wanted.

You can't say "like ebay" - you do not have hundreds of thousands of pound and neither does your funders. You won't come remotely close. Find out what the grant is likely to pay up to. If you are only getting £1k, forget it for any kind of decent auction site you are looking at a few thousand and more, depending on what you thin you want it to do. And you will always say "and can you just" - well "can you just add this" costs extra money if it wasn't included in the quote.

You want to tell someone what you want the site to do, and they can provide a price once they have worked out what you need, without providing you with the breakdown of the spec as such, as I would if I were quoting, saying this is what you would get for XXX pounds. This is better than you trying to drum up a spec or thinking they will do one for free.

As much as I agree with you on principle, expecting someone who isn't technical to supply you with a detailed functional/technical specification outlining what every page and function is to do is totally unrealistic.

Even in the companies I've worked for I've never received that.

When you're dealing with someone who isn't technical, the best approach is the agile approach. Get them to put down what they want to achieve (equals and epic) and how they expect to achieve that (stories).

So an epic would be I want to sell products using PayPal. Then the stories would be "I want to add a product to a cart", "I want to choose to pay using PayPal", "PayPal will approve or deny the payment" etc...

I'm needing rough prices for setting up a website for an online based company.

I need it to work like eBay with constant images being added as well as a checkout system linked to PayPal.

Can anyone help, I need prices first to submit an application for s grant

Try myshopify.com or I used one.com with prestashop which was a bit of a pain to upload but cheap as chips. There are plenty of cheap hosts which have shop templates. I am sure that you could do this without the help of a webdesigner as they can be really pricey, particularly for a start-up. Good luck.

It only takes a couple of seconds to load up on my laptop. It also loads the mobile version quick on 3G signal.
