Black Cabs In Sheffield

Recommended Posts

Taxi drivers are supposed to be honest people who we can entrust with taking our children without any other escort. This means that they cannot be criminals, particularly those involved in the drug trade. It is entirely right that someone loses their licence if they are convicted of any offence.

I accept for some convictions this may be very pertinent. But a blanket ban on all persons convicted of any offence is far too over the top for me.

I'll give you one example why.

You could say all sex offenders should be unable to operate a taxi. In principle I'd agree with that but I would even argue against it, the criminal offence of urinating in a public place is for a man a sex offence for example. I'm not saying I condone urinating on the high street but I would guess that most men have at sometime urinated elsewhere other than a toilet at some time in their life.

Some poor guy has a few beers walks home gets caught short, no public toilets (are there any anymore in sheffield?) goes and urinates behind a bush or down an alley. Not a nice thing to do but he is observed doing so someone makes a complaint he is arrested and convicted fined and possibly put on the sex offenders register for the act of exposure. To satisfy KenH he would lose his living as a taxi driver, as well, and probably quite a number of other occupations as well.

I can see this country going that way eventually, but lets try and delay the implementation of a police state for as long as possible please.

The law is an ass, I'm not the first nor will I be the last to say it but when are we going to do something about it?

KenH and those that think (or perhaps don't think) like him just make a hard life harder for us all.

Operating a taxi where you pick up woman late at night or deliver children to school isn't an occupation for convicted criminals of any kind.

Many other jobs are fit for such people and they can do those. I don't really see why this is a problem?

Obviously you read my previous post but clearly didn't manage to take the time to understand it.

I guess there is just no point in conversing with those that WON'T understand.

No, I read it, you are just wrong.

I don't want the sort of people who think it is fine to pee in public because they have drunk too much, to be able to get a taxi licence.

What ever you might think of B;ack Cabs, taxis generally and the council's attitude towards either this is just wrong.

The council stated that following there latest purge on taxis and the fitness of the vehicles to be on the road (not saying thats a bad thing) this happened.

One driver, who has not been named, had his licence revoked after being jailed for six months in January for being involved in the production of cannabis.

So how is this person supposed to rehabilitate when he gets out? is one question. What the hell it had to do with the council and this persons fitness to operate a taxi anyway? is another. If the driver had been stoned whilst driving a taxi fair enough but it looks

as though all he/she was doing was growing a bit of weed. Without getting into the whole legalize cannabis debate. What the council did here was just wrong.

Talk about big brother is watching you. Wait till we have to have chips, and have to use them to pay for everything, this poor bugger would probably had access to bank accounts denied, be unable to buy anything or use public transport, memberships of anything cancelled and generally become an outcast or non-person.

It is for the Council (and other overseeing bodies) to establish what constitutes a 'fit and proper' person to work in any regulated (or notifiable) occupation. This has nothing to do with 'big brother' or 'police state'.

I joined my own particular club/organisation/profession and have to play by the rules. I work in a notifiable occupation, so not only do I go through CRB checks but if I went up in front of a Magistrate or Judge the authorities would notify my overseeing body and I'd risk getting struck off the Register and lose all my income.

A taxi/ph driver must notify the Licensing Authority of any historic or pending Court case that could affect his/her 'fit and proper' status. Not notifying the LA is reason enough for being struck off.

Them's the rules ...

I agree Taxi drivers have a very high opinion of their own driving skills. I see them driving incompetently all the time. Its about time they were better monitored by the police and the licence issuing authority

I use taxis as little as possible as they are driven so badly. If they were driven better, I'd use them more.

I'm pretty sure I'm not the only one, ergo: Drive better and you'll get more custom.

Just thought i'd bring this topic back to the top, just to please our taxi friends.

Accident last night, on the junction at the top of west street / glossop road.

Car coming straight down from the hospital, taxi thought he would turn right even though the car was close, inevitable crash. Car driver had right of way, but obviously not according to the "taxi rules"

I was driving my bus behind the accident, and the taxi driver got out and started shouting at the car driver, totally unbelievable, 100% taxi fault, but the poor car driver got some right hassle.

No other taxi's near the incident, but what's the betting there will be 5+ witnesses from taxi drivers. :hihi:

Have you put yourself down as a witness?

I had a similar incident a few years ago and the driver lied like a chocolate mouthed two year old, it must be a cultural thing. I have a mini SD camera recording all journeys now.
