Lingards in Sheffield

Recommended Posts

Uh Oh. Well until I can afford to visit the uk, I guess I'll have to declare my innings! Thanks everyone for all your help!

Hi Jared.

My grandad was John (jack) Lingard (born 1921), our part of the family live in Woodhouse, Sheffield. My dad, John's son is Donald Lingard.

My grandad married Florence Murphy and they had 5 children: John, Marilyn, Linda, Vivian and Donald.

I hope this helps...

Cassie Lingard :-)

Also, my dad confirmed that he has an uncle Tommy who moved to Nowra, Australia...

We have got a family tree with Lingards in it back to 1575 - originally living in Bradfield. They were Cutlers making scissors and knives. Robert Lingard was one of the first Cutlers at Sheffield Cutlers.

That's interesting, my Dad was in the cutlery trade, scissors actually, he worked for Joseph Rogers many years ago, then later Harrison Fisher. His father Thomas was in the same trade as was his father before him I believe.

My Lingard family were scissor makers back in the early/mid 1800s... Seems to be a family trade!!!!

My grandfather did some research into the family name once, not the family tree. He told me that the name had origins in Scandinavia and the Netherlands. He also told me that there were links to the Slave trade. My Grandmother told me that as a girl she was told about a Lingard, an uncle I think who lived in and around London. He inherited a Handsome cab company and quite a lot of land in and around the London area. Unfortunately he was an alcoholic and gambler and either sold or gambled it all away. She also told me that her mother once let Charles Peace hide away from the Police in their attic. Finally my auntie once told me that we are distantly related to Florence Nightingale.

This thread got me thinking and bought all the above to mind again.

If you have a look at Bradfield Parish Council website they have a history section where you find a lot of information about the Lingard family.

Been doing a bit of research and it seems there is a Lingards Road in London in SE 13 so may be my Nan was right.

Hiya old mate, I've done a lot of family ancestry research and found a lot of the things I was told by my gran and other family members, which I took as myths, were actually true.

Don't discard anything, you never know.

Hope you are well.:headbang:
