RagDollyAnna   10 #1 Posted October 7, 2013 Hi, I'm an Archaeology student at Sheffield University. This year we are to begin projects in which we must focus on a particular place of our choice within the city to investigate archaeologically (which does not neccessarily mean digging anything up, most of our methods are very non-invasive, we don't like to make a mess!). We aim to make this project very community focused and hope to involve the local folk as much as possible. We don't want to just look at the history of something and leave it there, we want to find out what it meant to people too, and hopefully help it to live on in some way through our project if possible. I just wondered if anyone had any suggestions as to places that you feel might be worthy of investigation? It could be a building, a public place, the site of a former building, a public park, a street maybe, any suggestions would be welcome. Please don't assume that it has to be something ancient for archaeologists to be interested in it, the recent past - including Sheffield's remarkable industrial heritage are of great interest too. We would really like our research to be relevant to and of interest to the people in the area so I would really appreciate any thoughts or suggestions. Thank you
 Share this content via...

Hillpig   10 #3 Posted October 7, 2013 The battle of Brunaburgh possibly took place at Tinsley. This according to Michael Wood. In it seven kings died and it was possibly the largest battle ever to take place in England. It would be interesting to find out if this is the right location.  Out side Sheffield, Rockingham Kiln at Swinton is a relic of very early industrial revolution and may merit further investigation.  Hengist, leader of the first Saxon war band to come to this country was supposed to have been captured in a battle near to Denaby. He was taken to Leeds where he was executed. Is there any evidence of a battle or occupation in the Denaby area?  It took place, apparently somewhere between Mexbough Castle and Conisborough castle, whilst Conisborough is well known has any research been done at Mexborough?  Another ancient site would be Wincobank Hill once an anti aircraft and anti zeppelin site it was fortified in Roman Times.  ---------- Post added 07-10-2013 at 16:05 ----------  I am really surprised you have not had more interest, there are dozens of old fossils on here that should be able to make suggestions.
