Sheffield Cycling Inquiry - Please contribute

Recommended Posts

Hi,

Sheffield City Council have launched a cycling inquiry to review cycling in Sheffield and to eventually develop a new cycling strategy.

What's good about cycling in Sheffield?

What's bad about cycling in Sheffield?

What benefits are there from increased cycling?

What should the council do to increase levels of cycling?

They've setup a questionnaire to get peoples opinions on cycling in Sheffield here. http://meetings.sheffield.gov.uk/council-meetings/scrutiny/culture-economy--sustainability/cycling-inquiry

If you cycle in Sheffield then please have a look and fill it in.

If you don't cycle in Sheffield then please fill it in and explain why you don't!

Thanks!

Thanks for the link.

Sheffield needs to commit to state of the art routes of a minimum of 200 mtrs. Ideally through congested areas. I know this is probably difficult and expensive. One (1) would do for a start. We could be proud of it.

BUT

What's the good of 15 metres of green tarmac at 30 locations.

Oh I know! That's 450 metres of grant money.

Please, please, please, treat this subject with integrity and an honesty that reflects the intention of the legislation.

I've just submitted my thoughts :D

Tomorrow is the last day to respond, so if you ride a bike/would like to please make an effort and do so and tell the council what you think.

You can do it online and it's pretty quick and easy depending on how much you want to write!

Crikey, how embarrassing for them, the document looks like it's been written by someone who failed GCSE English.

4. What in your view are the top three actions that would broaden and increase cycling in Sheffield?

Cycling is a verb, I don't think that cycling can be broadened or increased.

What they actually want to ask is how the uptake of cycling can be increased, or how the amount of cycling can be increased.

Give over, it's obviously a gerund noun.

The question just looked badly worded when I read it.

To be fair, I had to look up gerund, my generation wasn't taught formal grammar at school!

And I'm still not convinced that the question is worded well.

An example of the use of cycling as a gerund

Cycling is an activity that I've always enjoyed.

To expand the gerund

"The activity of riding a bike is an activity that I've always enjoyed..."

To do the same to the question

that would broaden and increase cycling in Sheffield?

that would broaden and increase activity of riding a bike in Sheffield?

Doesn't work...

Please let's not let this degenerate into a bike-bashing thread!

If you're worried about being flattened - please fill in the survey and tell the council that you are.

If you're concerned by driver attitude - ditto.

If you would rather bikes weren't on the road with the cars - same again!

Agree 100%... people should submit their views to the council - its wasted on here because this forum will do nothing. At least the council may do something.

Or

1.what factors would induce more frequent use of your bicycle?

2., what factors would induce more people to use bicycles?

Do you know many people who failed GCSE English or are you reflecting on your own experience?
