What thickness does my insulation need to be?

Recommended Posts

Hi,

just about to replace some insulation tubes in my garage covering 15mm dia water pipes. It seems they weren`t all covered last winter before we moved in and there has been a blow out on one of the pipes.

I appreciate I don`t want the cheapo economy pack, but there are several other thicknesses as well. Just didn`t want to pay unnecessarily.

Also I`ve seen some on E-Bay less expensive than Wickes.

Many thanks.

It isn't a straight forward answer as the quality/density of the insulation can vary.

Whatever you use, it is worth taking care to make sure that it has the chance to do its job.

Internal diameter should ensure a tight fit around the pipe. Air gaps between the pipe and the insulation can make it a waste of money.

Seal the joints between section of insulation and make good joints around curves, angles and taps.

How long is a piece of string?

As a rule of thumb, I'd be looking at 25mm.

Thanks cgksheff,

I`ll bear in mind what you say when I go down to Wickes sometime in the next few days.
