Should smoking be banned in prisons?

Recommended Posts

Incidentally does anyone know if smoking is allowed in psychiatric hospitals?

Some patients are in there for years and smoking is amethod of self medication.

I'd be interested to hear

Already been in the courts (albeit in Scotland)

The state couldn't afford the claims for damages from the wrongfully convicted.

Also, sending criminals inside and turning them into physically hardened, toughened, resilient criminals with a grudge against society and the state isn't "smart sentencing".

Thirdly, you risk having to build so many prisons if everyone goes in for at least 5 years, that you'll end up with a large private prison industry that thrives on high crime rates. They will of course lobby parliament to create more and more criminals, and will boast to their shareholders about rising crime rates in their prospectuses.

Fourthly, it's a dumb idea.

Or we could just subcontract the whole lot out to North Korea where it is far cheaper to keep folk in prison. There is also the added benefit that prisoners can smoke over there....

... particularly after the electrodes have been removed.

"The state couldn't afford the claims for damages from the wrongfully convicted."

The State Could Abolish the right to claim damages if it wishes, I think it would do to protect itself.

They can be all these things, they just can't Break the laws that result in them going to prison.

Why would you need more Prisons?

The idea being you don't want to go there in the first place, when this fact gets across, you will need fewer prisons.

Old tom makes a valid point, We used to export our criminal problem.

An idea that has already been tried. Failed miserably as very minor offenders were give long sentences to enable the CEO and shareholders to make a canny penny.

You're right though. Dumb idea.

I take it you would be quite happy with that if you were wrongfully convicted.

Do you think prison should serve to rehabilitate criminals, or simply store them for a time?

Why would you need more Prisons?

The idea being you don't want to go there in the first place, when this fact gets across, you will need fewer prisons.

The evidence doesn't support your assertion - you'd need more prisons because if your minimum term is five years, you will end up with a lot more prisoners. Even if there was a deterrent effect from long sentences for minor offences, it wouldn't be immediate, so you'd see a serious spike in the prison population. To have prisoners, you need prisons. Magistrates are working hard to try and keep the prison population stable.

The evidence is that in most cases, prison is neither necessary nor effective punishment.

No-one in the world, anywhere, only exports. If prisoners become an import export commodity, we will import them if there's a profit to be made. And if new prisons are to be built the cost needs to be recouped from somewhere.

Britain could build a thousand new prisons and begin importing prisoners if there's a truly free market. It could be a new growth industry, like it has been elsewhere in the world.

The question is, do we want it? Some of you obviously do, and if you can't see the tragic consequences of such a policy, then you're too far gone to be reasoned with to be honest.

You simply cannot state what will and will-not happen, you don 't know the future.

They said uncle Adolf would not dare invade UK, yet he still did.

Please refrain from posting if not relating to the topic being discussed.

Hang on a bit, I lived through WW2, and I don't remember old Schickelgruber setting foot on our shores. His mate Rudolph Hess dropped in for a chat in 1940 and stayed till 1945 but it wasn't an invasion as such. Just a chance to tell us how much Der Fuehrer loved us. That's why he was bombing the crap out of us.

Was this your Uncle Adolf, the travelling lederhosen salesman from Baden-Baden, or the Austrian bloke with the dodgy 'tache with a perchant for invading Poland and mass extermination?

I'm getting on in years, but I seem to remember something about Hurricanes and Spitfires, whatever they were and winning a battle. It must be true. They made a movie about it, though I don't think Mel Gibson was in it so it might not have been true.

How's about you forgo your "Human Rights" as you go in through the prison Gates.

You pose that question as though it was a choice being given. Who would chose that?

Make them do Brutally Laborious Tasks seven days a week for five years and if they come back make it ten years, and so on, Eventually you won't want to go Back.

Human rights violations happen all around the world to a lesser or greater degree. As has been pointed out to you by other posters..to which you haven't replied or ignored..prisons are full and on the rise regardless of human rights. Non of your argument stand up. They could though be interpreted euphemistically as the rantings of a religious lunatic with a stone in each hand impatiently waiting for the verdict..
