15.09.13 - Cobden View 5-1 Sheffield Forum (Junior Challenge Cup)

Recommended Posts

Sheffield Forum struggled in front of goal for the first time in months as they went down to Cobden View in the Junior Challenge Cup. Talisman Shane Spence was unavailable this weekend so the return of Liam Wales was more than welcomed, Nathan Jenkins replaced Thomas Hunaishi who started as sub in this one.

Forum have never been given, what would be considered, an easy draw in the County Challenge Cup first round and this one was certainly the toughest of them all. Cobden View, a former Imperial League Premier side, were this seasons draw and they took an early lead when a quick free kick caught the defence sleeping leaving the forward to go through on goal and score.

Forum though attacked afterward but didn't play with the fluidity or accuracy of recent weeks but one move nearly paid off as the attack was built from midfield, finally coming out to Mitchell Dunne on the right. His ball across goal found the incoming Wales just yards from goal only for him to miss hit the ball and send it wide.

Cobden View then made it 2-0 and Forum again went into self destruct mode and soon added a third prompting a couple of changes to tighten things up. Forum next attack saw Steven Morris run in on goal but his lob of the keeper didn't carry enough conviction. Wales saw a well hit free kick sail just over the bar whilst Shane Middlebrook shot just wide of the upright.

Forum were struggling infront of goal with so many players having an 'off day' but keeper Callum Hall was keeping them in it at the other end with some great reaction saves.

HT: Cobden View 3-0 Sheffield Forum

The second half basically summed up the first as Forum lost the ball from kick off and found themselves defending straight away. No danger in the end this time but it was a warning. Forum though did strike first in the second half as Dunne turned his defender just inside the left corner of the area and was brought down. Daniel Sheedy stepped up and put away the penalty to leave a 2 goal difference and half an hour remaining.

Struggling still, chances came and went for both sides but Dunne had the chance to pull another back as he pulled away from his marker only for the keeper to stop his shot.

It was not to be though and with five minutes left, the decision was made to just go for it by playing 3 at the back. 2 goals were needed in 5 minutes but it was the home team that scored the 2 giving them a 5-1 win, a scoreline that was maybe a little harsh on Sheffield Forum but on the other hand, they know they didn't turn up today.

Back to league action on Sunday against The Bridge Inn on Parson Cross Park. Three points is the aim but we will have to get our finishing boots back on!

Team: Hall, Brownhill, Jenkins, Scothorne, Davison, Dunne, Wales, Middlebrook, Gray, Morris, Sheedy. Subs: Hunaishi, Gayle, Gladwin, Tyler, Proctor (Rolling subs)
