Advice needed asap!

Recommended Posts

My brother owns his semi detached house at Shiregreen, formerly a council house. He looks after it but the next door neighbour's soffit is almost falling off. My brother has tried to reason with the bloke next door to repair or replace it before a gust of wind takes off all the slates but he's not interested. As they share the same roof, is there anything that my brother can do to get his neighbor to repair his property. Any advice would be appreciated.

Yes, but he'll need to verify whose responsibility it is: joint or his or neighbour's (or the Council's, if the neighbour is still a tenant).

Check the registered titles and the RTB Conveyance too.

Isn't it also part of his House insurance to keep things in a reasonable condition ?

Yes, assuming "his" to mean "the neighbour's"; but maybe the neighbour is still a Council tenant.

Dear Mr Shaw, Thank you for your advice. I've emailed you at your office. Thanks again.

Dependant upon the damage to the soffit and how easy it is to repair - it may be simpler, quicker, cheaper, less agro to ask the neighbour if you can repair for him or pay someone to repair it on his behalf.

If it just needs refixing then paying someone with a ladder and a screwdriver to do the job may be a relatively sensible strategy.

If the neighbours property is still managed by the council, maybe he just needs some help organizing it through their maintenance department.
