08.09.13 - Sheffield Forum 9-2 Merry Monk

Recommended Posts

Sheffield Forum claimed a comprehensive win over Merry Monk to make it 2 wins from 2. Nathan Jenkins was ruled out with an injury he sustained at the end of last weekends match so Callum Davison made his first start as Aiden Brownhill made his debut replacing Tapiwa Mabaya who was unavailable. Tom Gray picked up a midweek strain so was named as a sub to try and ensure a full strength side next weekend. Last seasons top scorer Daniel Sheedy was given a starting role in his place.

Merry Monk kicked off and straight away tried to catch Forum keeper Callum Hall out with a shot from the centre spot. The shot cleared the bar but Hall took a knock as he watched it over, luckily though he was ok to continue after a short break. Just minutes later and Forum took the lead after good work by Mitchell Dunne to keep the ball in and pass his maker. He hit it low across goal towards Shane Spence only for the defender to turn it into his own net.

Five minutes later it was 2-0 from a similar position. Spence kept in a long cross, dinked it back into the middle and Daniel Sheedy was there to take a touch before hitting it past the keeper. This time, just three minutes later, Jordan Gladwin cooly put away a third. Steven Morris played an excellent ball into the box for Gladwin to direct past the hapless goalkeeper.

A brief lapse allowed Monk to pull one back less than five minutes after that but a 3 goal advantage was restored on the twenty minute mark. Matthew Scothorne spotted Morris free from a free kick and played him in to score his first goal for the club.

After a mad first quarter, the game settled a little but that did not mean there was no action. Shane Middlebrook hit a shot just wide from outside the area, Morris tried to lob the keeper as he was put through but couldn't lift it high enough. Middlebrook then had a goal disallowed as he slid in for a ball just yards out, his touch came back off a defender before hitting his arm and going over the line. The referee ruled it out for handball. Spence and Sheedy both had chances and Dunne shot straight at the keeper. At the other end, Monk had less opportunities but struck a couple of shots from outside the area without troubling Hall.

Another goal was to come in the first half though and just a few minutes before the whistle went for half time. Aiden Brownhill played the ball wide to Dunne who ran from inside his own half, down the wing with Spence in the middle. Dunne continued his run and decided to go alone and netted with a confident strike for his second goal of the season.

HT: Sheffield Forum 5-1 Merry Monk

Forum started full of confidence in the second half with no intention of letting this game slip. Monk started breaking faster and playing more direct whilst Forum played tighter, smaller passes however it was a direct ball that led to a sixth. Brownhill knocked the ball crossfield to Sheedy who brought the ball down, cut inside of his man and hit a sweet shot into the bottom corner from outside the area.

Few minutes later and it was seven as Sheffield Forum played some good football in Monks half of the pitch. Spence received the ball on the corner of the area, played a good 1-2 with Sheedy just outside the box and struck the ball well into the corner.

It took two more minutes for him to double his tally as Tom Gray knocked the ball to Spence, he beat his marker and smashed home.

At 8-1, a few changes were made but the chances kept coming. The final Forum goal came as Ashley Proctor was brought down in the area on the right and with Sheedy having being replaced, Spence took the chance to claim his first competitive hat trick for Sheffield Forum.

Monk were not quite finished though and they added another consolation on 80 minutes.

It was a good performance from the team to make it two wins from two at the start of the season as we now look to the Junior Challenge Cup competition next Sunday. We play Cobden View in a tough draw but a nice pitch where we will be confident of causing an upset with a few players due to return.

Team: Hall, Brownhill (Nettleship), Hunaishi, Scothorne, Davison, Gladwin, Morris (Gray), Dunne (Gill), Middlebrook, Sheedy (Proctor), Spence.
