The parkrun thread

Recommended Posts

A month’s rain in 24hrs during the week resulted in a number of cancellations across the Yorkshire & Humber region. However at parkruns that were able to go ahead, attendance was much improved compared with the last couple of weeks.

There were 41/59 parkruns in the Yorkshire and Humber region. Cancellations were too many to list, but notably Millhouses, Penistone and Wetherby have missed three consecutive weeks.

Of 40 events completed both last week and this, 38 had higher attendances and two (Armley and Sewerby) were lower.
Total attendance was 10837, an increase of 1053 (10.8%) from the previous week.

This was the fewest events staged across the region since 9 February (37/51).

Sheffield Castle had a record attendance (177).

Oakwell Hall & Skipton both had attendances of 214 and Doncaster & Sheffield Castle had 177.

The average weekly attendance over the last 12 months has increased by 28.1% (9498 to 12171). The mean attendance per parkrun per week over the history of parkrun for the region is 210.1; the median is 170.

The three venues that had missed the last three weeks were all able to go ahead - Millhouses staging a much delayed second event!

The continued poor weather and ground conditions, particularly if you’re running on grass, continued leading to a couple of cracking niche stats (see below).

There were 56/59 parkruns in the Yorkshire and Humber region. Cancellations were at Humber Bridge , New Earswick and Temple Newsam.

Of 54 events completed both last week and this, five had higher attendances and 49 were lower.
Total attendance was 9378, a decrease of 2048 (20.4%) from the previous week.

The average attendance for the last year has fallen for the fifth consecutive week. The first time this has happened in the history of parkrun across the region.

The average weekly attendance over the last 12 months has increased by 26.8% (9560 to 12124). The mean attendance per parkrun per week over the history of parkrun for the region is 209.9; the median is 170.

It was cold, but at least it was dry! However the overnight frost did lead to a number of cancellations across the Yorkshire & Humber region.

There were 47/59 parkruns in the Yorkshire and Humber region. Cancellations were at Centre Vale, Cleethorpes, Cliffe Castle, Dewsbury, Graves, Halifax, Huddersfield, Humber Bridge, Oakwell Hall, Potternewton, Rother Valley and Wakefield Thornes.

Of 45 events completed both last week and this, 36 had higher attendances and nine were lower.
Total attendance was 9547, an increase of 169 (1.8%) from the previous week.

Sewerby & Temple Needham both had attendances of 155 and Frickley Country & Northallerton had 76.

Niche stats:
Total region attendance has been under 10000 for four out of the last six weeks. The last time this happened was March 2018.

The first week in December is, allegedly, the lowest parkrun attendance of the year but Sheff and Roth buck the trend and record an attendance in the 2,000's. Concord lead the way with their 5th highest attendance. Millhouses showed signs of settling down with an increased attendance, on the previous week, for the first time. Graves seems to be the major contributor to them.

If Christmas Day wasn’t already in the hearts and minds of parkrunners, then it certainly was after the 2019 edition!Any comparison with the Saturday edition is irrelevant purely because of the number of planned events. Having said that, of 27 venues which held events in the Yorkshire & Humber region, 24 had attendances higher than the previous Saturday and only three were lower.

To show how Christmas Day parkrun has grown in the region over the years, listed below are the number of runners and events over the last five years:

2015: 3000 (13 venues)
2016: 2937 (13)
2017: 4657 (18)
2018: 6430 (24)
2019: 8509 (27)

Four venues recorded all-time attendance records: York (803), Roundhay (558), Concord (414) and Sheffield Castle (221).

York: first time attendance of 800+. Only three other venues in the region (Sheffield Hallam, Huddersfield & Hull) have had higher. Tenth highest attendance ever for the region (out of 14335 events).
Roundhay: second time 500+.
Concord: first time 400+. (Only five, out of 466 events at this venue, have had 200+.)
Sheffield Castle: first time 200+. Now only five venues in the region (out of 59) have never had attendances of 200+; Millhouses has never been lower than 241.

The regular Saturday summary will be produced at the weekend. 🎄
