Lots of new bus gate cameras now live

Recommended Posts

If it was on Broad Street then the councils website is incorrect as i read it.

Areas where we propose to introduce camera enforcement

Boston Street bus gate

Broad Street bus lane

Charter Row bus lane

Ecclesall Road bus lanes

South Lane bus gate

Spital Hill bus lane

If cyclists want to use the road instead of the many cycle lanes then let them, but if they get in my way i'll knock em' off.

Also a red light in this country normally means stop behind the white line on the road and not keep cycling past the line and onwards.

The council haven't updated that page since July 31st, so while they were proposing it then, they appear to have put it into effect now...and just not bothered updating the site yet.

Ok, but if you're going to a new tax it's only fair if car drivers also pay your new tax to use the road. A car takes up around 10 times the space so around £300 to £500 a year would be fair. This would be on top of the VED which should be paid at around the same rate for both cyclists and cars, in the interest of fairness.

How much does a non emission electric car pay for VED, because it'll only be fair if the cyclist pays the same amount.

Do you think it's time that all cyclists that use the roads should have to have insurance, and also should have to pass a proper cycling test (as an equivalent to a driving test)? Just so that those who do ride on the roads have a better understanding of what to expect, and what's expected of them?

I think if they did, it would take some of the sting out of motorists arguments - but as it stands anyone can just take any old bike onto a main road and career around like Frank Spencer, and not even have to wear any safety gear! It tars the reputations of considerate cyclists and just having a properly regulated system, would make it fairer all round.

To clear this up, only being two minutes drive away, i've just nipped down there to have a look.

Just after the crossroads there's this sign. Within the next two hundred metres there's five more signs giving the restriction times. How anyone could miss these three is beyond me.

Case closed. :hihi:

Didn't realise the Queens Road one was actively being enforced, though I only usually use that stretch near the B&Q, and don't recall seeing any signs about it being enforced there - will have a closer look next time!

There are signs up, I noticed them earlier on the way back from B&Q.

No of course not, but they should be more aware when crossing roads (and not just wandering across aimlessly without looking, with their headphones on.

If we're not charging pedestrians for using the roads, but we are cyclists, where is the line drawn - how much do you have to use a road for you to need to pay VED? Do tandem cycles attract a double charge? What about people pulling a trailer with their cycle? Do child sized bikes attract a charge? What about tricycles?

That first sign hasn't been up long (and couldn't they have made an effort to cut the trees a bit there in front of it) :hihi: It certainly clarifies it though :)

Do you remember whereabouts the signs are placed on Queens Road for this - I only go on Queens Road from Charlotte Rd (Screwfix) to the right turn at the casino (so basically about the length of the B&Q!), and was probably too busy looking for a parking space to see it... I wondered if the sign was before the junction with Charlotte Road? I've been parking in that spot for about 10 years now on certain Tuesdays and Saturdays, and don't think i've ever seen a bus on that section of road going towards town!

The first sign is very obscured from a drivers perspective, i stood on the traffic light island to get a clear pic. Doesn't excuse missing the next five though, one of which is also very obscured i admit, though the first in my second pic is before the bus lane starts.

No excuses really are there. :)

It's visible on this Streetview image from May 2012 - https://maps.google.co.uk/?ll=53.370861,-1.462979&spn=0.001917,0.003449&t=h&z=18&layer=c&cbll=53.370773,-1.464029&panoid=jlGmxh8RvQTNTq0wCJmo3g&cbp=12,341.17,,0,7.38

There's another two further down, and one saying "Bus Lane Cameras".

The blue ones were always there (or some were), at least that yellow sign leaves no one in any doubt - that's all that is needed, just to be clear if it's actively being monitored, then no one can really complain.

Kinda like when they change a road layout, they put up the 'new road layout' signs to make complacent drivers aware... and that's all this is, alerting those people who have got used to driving in that lane and getting away with it, that you'll get fined in future!

oh stop being obtuse!! car drivers pay already so cyclists should also! non emmision electric cars should pay something also...........in the interest of fairness and if cyclist did have to pay and were accountable for their bad roadcraft we would have less accidents:roll:

Cheers for that! I guess we've just been lucky to have got stuck in enough football traffic that we don't park up until just after 630 then :) - I didn't realise there were any cameras there though, so will make sure in future to be more aware. We always aimed to be there for 630 as it fills up really quickly now, since they introcued the permit zone on all the other nearby roads (but that's another thread :D ).

On what basis do you derive that figure? VED is based on emissions so if you use that they would be zero rated like electric and low emission cars. If it's for provision and maintenance of the road/cycle networks you'd have to calculate it based on how much wear and tear cycles do to the roads relative to cars, lorries, etc. It would be tiny - less than the proportion of their council tax that is currently spent on highways. It would cost far more to administer than would be gained from it.

No you just moaned that they don't pay any - it amounts to the same thing.

Anyway, cyclists currently do have to pay duty on any fuel they buy - at exactly the same rate car drivers do. It's not their fault if they don't use any. ;)

If it's an offence to breach the conditions of use of bus lanes/gates why would whether the council have announced they are going to enforce them have any bearing on whether a fine was valid? Do you think laws should only be obeyed when they are enforced?

You're obviously not fit to drive. Please hand in your driving licence for everyone's safely.

you clearly need to get a grip on reality:roll::roll:

Says the one complaining about "our car hating council" because he got a ticket for not paying attention to road signs.

In fatal collisions between motor vehicle and cycles, the majority are the fault of the driver of the motor vehicle.

Surely it would make more sense to educate and improve the ability of the drivers, as they are the major cause of the problem, instead of blaming the victim.
