I went there from 1977 when it was Top Rank. I know one of the DJ's - a big lad we called Settee (Steeleys Disco). And I knew the chef, a guy called Andy who rode a Kawasaki Z1000. By the time it was the Roxy I'd grown out of that sort of thing and only went a couple of times.

Perhaps the best nights were the Pajama Jumps organised by the Students Union. A pub crawl down West Street then in to the club if you had a ticket!

I remember Roxy's in the early eighties had two dance areas. The big one downstairs and a smaller one upstairs. The smaller one used to play alternative music such as Killing Joke, New Order etc. What was the one in the High Street on the left hand side going down?

And just like Kirky i also met my now ex wife there.

legends was the bar on high st also formally crazy daisy

If I remember rightly the Top Rank opened round about 1968 ,Tuesday nights used to be a good night all Tamla and Atlantic music .There used to be a D.J.that came from Radio Luxembourg ,somebody Prince who was quite good .I can remember going to "do's " there proper dinner and dances even doing the March of the Mods and the Valeeta .A lot of groups came there to promote their singles ,when you had to sell a lot to get in the charts! Saturday mornings they used to have a disco for under-16s ,it kept a lot of kids out of bother for a bit ,they also used to have a flea market there on a regular basis. The best night there later on was Thursday night "grab a granny " you had to be really struggling if you couldn't pull in there ! Where do all the married women go now to get a change of scene? The bouncers there were well hard and those steps coming out didn't half hurt your head when they threw you down them! It used to bounce round that area of sheff with the Fiesta ,casino and the Claymore which was only 1 of 2 pubs in sheff that sold Tartan bitter at that time .

yeh i remember the DJ they called him tony prince..the music was good too. i also remember the saturday mornings flee markets. saw love affair and The Who there too....you could always guarentee a good fight in there lol !!

I went when it was Steeleys on a Sunday Afternoon rollerskating, I also went when it was Roxy's, saw frank Bruno lose to Mike Tyson on the screens in there, Roxy's was the best, but if it was so good as we all remember why did it close down?? Most Pubs and clubs reinvent themselves a couple of times before closing, Roxy's never did it just closed and stopped being. I once saw plans for that part of Sheffield town centre, it was rufurbishment plans and Roxy's never featured, I wonder if it was due the same fate as the old ABC cinema, but it didn't get demolished before the project was shelved!??

Stefan Dennis from nieghbours fame once appeared at roxy. I remember him singing that dodgey song, then he started throwing signed pictures into the audience, which caused those at the back to surge forward, pinning those at the front up against the stage has it was pushed back a good 2ft. They must have had sore legs the next morning. Ouch!!

....looking forward to it already ! - sounds like being my first reason to ever venture back to Sheff nightlife for 20+ years - hope its 80's- 90's "proper" music ! for us 40+'s !! - funny how we used to call it "grab-a-granny" - now most of us are GParents , and the "originals" are probably GGParents!!!!!!!!!:hihi::hihi::hihi:- how time flies !
