New motorway service station

Recommended Posts

From the Alternative Sites document on the planning site

7.5

A number of responses to the public consultation suggested further alternative sites which they felt should be considered (see Consultation Supporting Statement which accompanies the application). One such site, Smithy Wood Business Park, is located close to Junction 35. However, this site does not share a common boundary with the Motorway, is also closer to residential properties and would require traffic to use the local road Network and pass through the Business Park to gain access. As such it has not been included in the assessment

They didnt even consider the obvious alternative!! The ARROGANCE of it!! I am sure that I have visited motorway services that do not share a common boundary and use local roads for access so THATS a damn poor argument

Cant think of any that pass near local houses for access. The nearest one I can think of is the Pease Pottage services on the M23, yes it is off a roundabout and turn right but you dont pass houses to get to it.

Another bite into England's ancient woodland. The Woodland Trust and other groups have objected strongly to this development. Begin to imagine our land without the oak, beech and chestnut trees, bluebells and wildlife. Would it really be a better place with fast food outlets and lines of cars instead? This development, as well as destroying our natural environment, is lining some businessman's pocket at the expense of out heritage.

Maybe they've got something planned for the brownfield site, but on the proviso that they build the service station on the woods??

Would make a cracking place to stick a logistics firm or something.

Awesome M1 access, right next to the service station so easy to find and easy fuel.

Good public transport access for the workers, etc etc etc.

Would give lots of jobs too

Most "Tree Huggers" don`t have or want jobs so they aren`t interested in the wider picture of providing unemployment.

There have been several logistics firms round that way that hit the buffers (excel being a big one) and if memory serves a massive Eddie stobarts place is shutting at barlborough which is also a stones throw from the m1. Logistic firms come and go like the wind.

Build the services just use a brownfield site.

On Friday, Sheffield Council announced a decision about the scheme would be postponed until mid-April.

A demonstration has taken place over plans to build a motorway service station on ancient woodland in South Yorkshire.

The £45m development is proposed for Smithy Wood, by M1 junction 35 between Thorpe Hesley and Chapeltown.

Liz Ballard, from the Trust, said: "It's a huge development, at least six times the size of a normal motorway service station area."

She added: "Smithy Wood is ancient woodland, a fantastic wildlife asset in greenbelt land, well-used and much-loved."

Nice to see a decent turnout at the protest meeting yesterday despite the awful weather.

Can anyone pinpoint for me exactly where this development is meant to be built?. If you come off the motorway roundabout at junction 35 and head towards chapeltown is it the wooded area on the left?. The land where there are usually lots of vehicles parked up during the week?. Or is it further down on the right near the Travellers pub?.

Why are they going to build one here, have they not given permission to build one at J33? Cannot see the point of two so close together especially when the one at J35 will be destroying ancient woodland.

Setting a precedent. Once they have built something like that on ancient woodland a housing estate will be a shoe in

In fairness a lot of new service areas are massive and are often used by both directions - the one at the A1(M) near wetherby is huge and very busy. The new one on the bottom of the M25 is very big too - 35 fuel pumps plus the hgv bit. They're a million miles away from the likes of Woodall. I don't doubt the need for a service area, there's a fair size gap between Woolley and Woodall, and unofficial service area at 29a is well used too.

Just pick a better spot.
