Thanks everyone - apologies for not getting back to you.

Managed to disconnect the battery in the end. We're still without upstairs lighting, but at least we managed to shut it down!

Disconecting a battery on a hard wired systymn would NOT shut it down. :hihi::hihi:

Why? he has lost power to the panel, disconnected the internal battery and the external backup in the bell box will be well flat by now so what will be powering it?

Blimey! Right, if the member has lost power to the control box the system will automatically switch feed to an internal 12v backup battery. Depending on the Ah size of the battery, the system will remain unaffected until this battery starts to run out (the speed of this will depend on how many other power hungry devices are hooked into the system such as movement detectors or external keypads). Separate to this, the external sounder has a smaller battery inside it which makes a full alarm sound when the cable is cut, problem is that the bell doesn't know the difference between the power from the control panel disappearing and an attack on the building! This type of sounder is called a Self Actuating Unit. Now, the only way the sounder can be stopped is in 2 ways, firstly, reinstate the mains power into the control box and reset the system or secondly disconnect or remove the battery from the sounder. If neither of these actions can be done, the sounder will go off until the little inbuilt battery within the sounder has discharged (and this does not stick to the 20 minute rule). Now, before anybody wants to chuck in their 'twopenneth', let's not cloud this issue and confuse those that find themselves in this horrible and often upsetting situation. Whilst there are several other types of control panel that may not work quite like this, 99% of them do...

As previously mentioned, if you can't get to the bell box or external sounder, you will need to call an alarm system engineer. I hope this helps!

All correct and bearing in mind that the panel lost power on the 10th and yesterday was the 12th the SAB battery will have been flat for a while.
