ECCOnoob   980 #85 Posted April 28, 2015 (edited) Tonight's TV programme (Channel 4) about the 'Sports Direct' company shows what it's like to be on a 0 hours contract, and it's not good...  It was certainly "edited" to look that way. Whether the thousands of staff and millions of customers who weren't interviewed or secretly filmed think that way only time will tell.  To be honest, rightly or wrongly the biggest problem with all these expose documentaries is that everyone looks and goes "ooh that's a disgrace" "ooh they should be boycotted" "ooh, im never shopping there again"  tick tock tick tock.... Oh, its Saturday, just popping in to tax avoiding Starbucks for a coffee, just gonna nip into slave labour zero hours staffed Sports World - god look how cheap that sweat shop Dunlop polo shirt is, just gotta have it!  This extract from the Herald sums up the Sports Direct Documentary perfectly...  ....And we could stop all this. If all the bargain-chasing fools who keep piling in the door to grab the cheap polo shirts, footballs and novelty mugs would only stop, Ashley would be forced to change. If we withheld our custom, all our little 3.99s and 12.99s, he'd have to react with fair treatment for his staff and honest dealings with the public. We can all stop him but, ah, we probably won't bother…. Edited April 28, 2015 by ECCOnoob
 Share this content via...

They do not have the luxury of choice in where to shop. It has to be the cheapest / best value. It's a vicious circle.  It would be better if people with money boycotted 'Sports Direct' shares. That would have more impact.
 Share this content via...

ricgem2002 Â Â 11 #91 Posted March 13, 2016 As an update, zero hours contracts have just been made illegal in New Zealand. Won't happen here, of course, but interesting all the same. glad to see this happening and not before time
 Share this content via...
Bob Arctor   11 #92 Posted March 13, 2016 Just wonderd if you are ofered a job on a zero hrs contract can you turn it down without the job centre stopping your benefits??  If you are on JSA you can turn down a ZHC without penalty and can jack in a ZHC job without any barrier to signing back on. I'm not sure about Universal Credit though.
 Share this content via...
