Lib Dem MP suspended because he dared criticise Israel

Recommended Posts

Pathetic from Clegg & Co (and 'the Lobby').

The Liberal Democrats have suspended one of their MPs, David Ward, for causing "considerable offence" by making controversial remarks about Israel.

The whips office comments seem to be perfectly reasonable, he's an MP whose party is part of the Government of the UK. If he thinks his best contribution to establishing a viable and just peace between Israel and the Palestinians is being a div on Twitter then he needs to get another job.

Questioning a countries right to exist is serious. Would he have said this about any other country?

No surprise that he's MP for Bradford East. He was just pandering for votes.

he wasnt actually sacked for the subject matter tho?

but the type of language he said it via?

In a formal letter, Alistair Carmichael, the Liberal Democrat chief whip, said the Bradford East MP had failed to live up to his promise to use "proportionate and precise" language

Promoting the elimination of a sovereign state is serious stuff.

He is the Bradford East MP, say no more. It is highly probable that he is just electioneering

Bit harsh on the old description of muslims there mel.

But the superlatives aside, yes, he's angling for votes from certain sections of his constituency by being an anti-semitic dick.

Maybe they'll prove him wrong by taking to the streets demanding he withdraw his comments that amount to calling for the anhiliation of a sovereign state because it happens to be Jewish?

Or maybe they'll vote for him as a result of his crude anti-semitism?

Who knows eh? It's just a big mystery. Could go either way.

There is a significant Muslim population in his constituency, most of whom will not be remotely anti-Semitic, but they will most certainly be ant-Israel, which is not the same thing; this Lib Dem MP is tapping into this anti-Israel sentiment.

I suspect he'd have said it about apartheid South Africa.

Perhaps he just wants the Israeli's discrimination against Arabs to end:

The survey found that a majority of the Jewish public -- 59 per cent -- say they want a system that gives preference to Jews applying for civil service jobs. Arabs, who constitute 20 per cent of the Israeli population, complain such a policy unofficially exists already.

Just under half of respondents, 49 per cent, said they want the state to treat Jewish citizens better than Arab ones, while 42 per cent said they did not want to live in the same building as Arabs and did not want their children to go to schools that also admit Arabs.

Tellingly, 58 per cent of those surveyed said Israel already practices a system of apartheid against Palestinians, an opinion normally only voiced by the Jewish state’s staunchest critics.

As an mp he's be in a good position to raise questions about such a survey in the house, probe the foreign office on the veracity of the stats and give impassioned speeches on the matter that were well sourced and credible.

Dog whistle jew hating on twitter however just seems like, in his head at least, there are lots of votes among parts of his constituency in being an anti-semitc div, regardless of the parliamentary consequences.
