Date and time changed

Recommended Posts

I put my pc on today and its date and time had changed to 2006.

This has been happening on my laptop for two yrs and i find it a nuisance to keep putting the time and date right everytime i turn on.

What is the cause of it and what can be done. Its really getting on my nerves.

They both run on windows vista.

The time and date is kept in Bios (as well as other things) and when you turn the PC/Laptop off it is kept up to date with the charge from a small battery (like a watch one ), so when you turn the PC on it 'remembers' that the time and date is. If it is losing time and date it is a sign that the battery has failed on a PC it is easy just remove old one and replace it like for like on a laptop they are usually soldered on

Google the name of your laptop along with "bios battery" and see what comes up.

Not necessarily. On laptops some use CR2012 and some use the ML1220.

Some don't have a BIOS battery at all and use a capacitor to store charge from the onboard battery and / or mains supply.
