Anyone know where I can get a Sheffield Pocketwatch

Recommended Posts

Morning,

I am trying to find a silver pocket watch made in Sheffield for my dads 60th birthday! I've tried E-Bay and such but so far not found anything great, it just needs to be a wind up one. Does anyone know anywhere in or around Sheffield that might specialise in them.

Thanks.

Try Sheffield scene shop on Norfolk street they got loads of stuff for sale that's made in Sheffield.

Have a look round the Sheffield Antiques quarter (they have a website and face book page)

Don't think find a Sheffield made pocket watch, not sure we ever had a watch making industry. The main centres were Coventry and London, you will find pocket watches with the name of a Sheffield retailer easily enough, but they were made elsewhere - common practice at the time and still, is to an extent. J.G.Graves is probably the most common one, big mail order (catalogue) company. I've seen quite a few with this name on them.

Try antique shops/centres, or auctions

As Elmambo said, there wasn't a Sheffield watchmaking industry, although no doubt there were skilled craftsmen who could repair and service watches made elsewhere. I have two watches with Sheffield on them, one a pair-case verge watch made in 1815 (still working) the other a Graves watch, c.1900 (also stillworking) but in both cases there is no doubt they were made elsewhere and merely had the local retailer's name supplied. If you do a search on ebay you will find (as I write) 24 watches with Graves on them, so they are not uncommon. Good luck finding one to suit your pocket. Remember you will need a chain too.

I started with my late Grandfathers JG Graves Lever hallmarked Chester 1900, I now give them as christening presents to my Grandsons which reminds me I've got to get another for my latest Grandson.

There was a JG Graves department store in the vicinity of the University when I was a child living in Walkley.

There are nearly always these watches for sale on Ebay, I've purchased three.
