EUCLID 11   10 #169 Posted November 15, 2014 On the Wentworth website a progress report is kept up to date regarding the compensation claim. All judgements to date have gone in the houses favour so its only a matter of time. How much time I don't know, but the team up there are confident it will be paid. One wing has dropped by 12 inches, typical mining subsidence in a heavily mined area.[/QUOTE] That manny Shinwell has a lot to answer for:(  Not really, Manny OPENCAST (that's surface mining) all around Wentworth. Ironically, it was deep mining that causes subsidence, and the Fitzwilliam family pits extracted coal from that area. The Coal Board took over all the pits in 1949 and carried on. By nationalizing the pits, the government became responsible for all subsidence. The government are now responsible for compensation.  ---------- Post added 15-11-2014 at 01:16 ----------  Where would the records of the opencast mining be held? Granma.   The Coal Authority (they replaced the old National Coal Board) should have records. There is a great arial photo of the open casting actually going on round the area. The photo is in the foyer of the house. The book 'Black Diamonds' contains loads of info and pictures. Nagel   10 #171 Posted November 16, 2014 Only come on thread on last page. Our Sunday paper (Sunday Post) stated it was up for sale, the largest house in the country with 365 bedrooms at a price of £7.000.000  That works out at £19,178 per bedroom. At that price a four bedroom house would be £77,000.  Bargain!
 Share this content via...
Timewarper   10 #172 Posted November 16, 2014 One of my favourite childhood memories was going to Wentworth as a school trip. We got to see some of the rooms in Wentworth Woodhouse too. Not many though, as there weren't many open to the public. I think it was still Lady Mabel then.  I know a ghost hunt company, Simply Ghost Nights (based in Doncaster) have a vigil planned there in the New Year. Blackbeard   10 #174 Posted May 24, 2015 Latest in the saga, Clifford Newbold died in April and the BBC web site has a piece on the proposed sale. Please look down the back of the sofa to see if you can find the £8 million plus the estimated £42 million needed for repairs, not sure if I could get a mortgage on it. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-south-yorkshire-32857322
 Share this content via...
1066 Â Â 10 #175 Posted May 25, 2015 Was a student at Lady Mabel College at Wentworth (1971-74) and would like to contact anyone who was on the General Course then. I now live in a cottage on the former estate of the Earl Fitzwilliam. Happy days playing sports, studying and socialising in the Rockingham Arms. Was at the house only last week watching an archery contest. The house is looking a little faded now.
 Share this content via...
