  1. 1. Should we be spending half a mil on events like Saturday?

    • Yes, free speech is vital no matter what the cost
    • Yes, but the protestors should have to contribute something
    • No, we can't afford it
    • E-E-EDL, muslamic rayguns, eh???? wot were question again?

It is understandable, but when their reaction threatens innocent citizens and diverts vital intelligence resources from the war against the enemy then I question their right to continue operating.

They do threaten , and do divert vital attention and should certainly be at least stopped from certain activities sure to cause violence , however to think (as certain people have suggested)they are anything like the same problem we face with radical islam is incredibly dense .

Although it is hard to quantify, there is an argument that the activities of the EDL actually increases radical Islam. I'm not sure where, but I remember seeing a police report suggesting the same thing.

Regardless of how often the EDL claim only to be against radical Islam, a brief look at their facebook pages reveals that their hatred is directed at ALL Asians and that doesn't go unnoticed in many communities.

Have a look at this from the main EDL facebook page to see what these people are really like.

Of course they are not anything like the threat of the islamist enemy, but given the threat posed by the enemy, our limited resources and our duty to all citizens to keep them safe, and given they do pose a genuine threat albeit a lesser one than the islamists would it not be sensible to in the first instance to formally ask them to stop it?

So let me try and get this straight .

Was 7/7 committed by radical Islamic lunatics they claim in the name of islam . Answer .... Yes

If you really want to know what is going on rather than just spouting rubbish then the answer is NO.

7/7 was not carried out by radicals it was carried out by fundamentalists.

There is a difference between fundies and radicals.

Radical Iranian women are trying to play football, all over the Middle East radical people are taking a stand against oppression. Mandela is a radical, the suffragettes were radicals, Wilberforce was a radical.

Being a radical is a step forward, it embraces the future. Radicals are the opposite of beard wearing, stoning loons.

What you are describing are Fundamentalists. They are dangerous and loony but they are not "radical" they are traditionalist and conservative.

Radical is different from Fundamental.

our limited resources and our duty to all citizens to keep them safe,

Policing costs for EDL demos over the last 4 years has now topped £30 million nationally. That is not chickenfeed, that is serious money!

To put it in perspective, that would pay for an extra three hundred police officers per year for the last four years.

And to put that in even more perspective, with special branch numbers currently being somewhere between 3,000-4000 that represents almost a 10% increase in the size of the special branch. A significant increase in resources!

So which of these would reduce radical Islamist activity?

1. More EDL demos.

2. A 10% increase in special branch officers, devoted solely to investigating extreme Islam. :)

Somebody on FB posted the UAF have been on Fargate today shouting the odds again. The police horses are certainly getting a few outings lately :) Anybody know what it was about this time?

Possibly spurred by the EDL's visit..

I hear that the National Front made an unwelcome appearance today. By all accounts they were made most unwelcome immediately (one would assume by "normal Sheffielders" since there was hardly time to mobilise a counter protest)

Indeed I got a text about 2:30 warning me about it as the NF are not noted for having "silent marches" and went into town with my camera (as I was already on the way there with it to take photos of the Moor development etc) but by half an hour later they had been "escorted" to the train station. Or so I hear, this is all second hand information

All there was of note when I was in town were the usual NPower and SKY trailers, a large wedding, and a bloke making a dog out of sand

I thought all that was last week. My informant said they were "scruffy looking, shouting nazi scum". So unlikely to be 'normal sheffielders'. Even the police horses looked bored, apparently.

The council won't let us have a next or an ikea in case it damages the city centre shops, but they tolerate all this going on in the heart of the retail area, the UAF et al, shouting and ranting every weekend, when are we going to get our city back so we can shop in peace?

They should tell all these groups they're not welcome here and charge a few with affray or something, rub the message in.

ETA: yeah, there was pix of the dog and the horses, none of the protestors though :D The dog looked pretty good for something made out of sand, imo.

I don't think today's NF visit was an "organised event" so the council have very little to do with it

It wasn't the NF today. According to a Police statement it was some loonies called The British Movement.

In that case, for a change anyone shouting "Nazi Scum" was actually correct, as the British Movement is very much National Socialist.

I thought they'd disappeared to be honest...

The legitimate cost of free speech or a complete waste of money, what do we reckon?

http://www.thestar.co.uk/news/local/500-000-cost-of-policing-edl-protest-in-sheffield-revealed-1-5754789

The massive police operation to keep English Defence League and anti-fascist demonstrators apart will be at least £500,000, The Star can reveal.

Some 1,000 officers from 10 different forces were deployed in Sheffield city centre on Saturday as more than 500 EDL supporters and the group’s leader, Tommy Robinson, came to lay a wreath at the war memorial.

They were met by a similar number of anti-fascist demonstrators.

The bill for the operation was confirmed by South Yorkshire Police and Crime Commissioner Shaun Wright.

He also revealed that two officers received minor injuries.

this is something ive tried to figure out ,as the police are all ready getting paid for being on duty how can it cost so much ?
