I lived on Clarence St (33 or 133 ) about 2 doors up from Michael Rd junction until I was 7 in 1961 although I went to St Silas school. There was a sweetshop on the corner.

I can only remember a few names - Wendy Sayles, Peter Kelly, David Prout, Sharon Greenfield and some identical twin boys on Hodgson St. My mum was friends with the Dewsnaps on Michael Rd.

Hello again

Yes, that really is very sad news. I knew Joan well. She was the one who 'escorted' me on my first day at 'big school' (Tapton). I have many fond memories of her and her family. Thank you for letting me know.

Regards Lynda

Hello

I think I lived at 71. had some cousins who went to St Silas - name of Mullins who lived on Hodgson Street. I also vaguely remember the identical twins but not their names! Must be an age thing when the memory begins to fade...

Don't know Jimmy Elwis, but a long while ago I asked in Expats if anyone remembered the monkey that use to be in a cage on Moore Street opposit where Richards of Sheffield cutlery was ( just before the roundabout ).

The cage was set into a brick wall and about 6 feet off the ground, it use to amuse the kids during the 60's.

Could this monkey have belonged to Jimmy Elwis ?

no, it belonged to the chip shop corner young st and bishop st

Hello Again David.

Although I have a reasonably good memory I can't remember the swimming teachers name. Do you remember the Headmaster and Headmistress - Mr.Mrs Holdsworth ?

On one ocassion Mrs Holdsworth took our class to Beauchief Abbey to do some brass rubbings, as she lived close-by she took us afterwards to her home where we all sat in the garden and she gave us orange juice. The playcentre - I remember it as if it was yesterday.....down in the bottom hall they had dancing to pop records, in the top hall they had Skittles you knock down with a swinging ball, snooker, needlework, drawing. I only lived around the corner from Springfield so it was ideal.

I lived on William street, the youngest of a big family, I remember going to Abbeydale road to do P.E. with Mrs Holdsworth, and she took us to her house, I wonder if she did this a lot or were we in the same class?

My memory may be a bit hazy about a few things though!

She used to take us for maths which I hated, it seemed to last for hours. I also went to the play centre at night, all those old Eagle annuals, and getting to watch 'Bambi' in one of the classrooms.

The Christmas parties when you had to take your own plate with your name on, and the smell of the plastic tablecloths, dancing in the lower hall.

In the winter they made a slide down the stairs in the upper playground and we'd queue up to slide down it.

Just remember Stuart Smith chasing the girls all round the block,I was a good girl, he never caught me lol.

Does anyone remember the dinner lady in the infants who used to stand and dish out 4 squares of shiny toilet paper?

We came back after one summer break and we were all given PENS!!! instead of pencils, it was amazing :0)

I remember the brown cards we got for swimming in the summer holidays, it was 6d usually if I remember correctly. there was the ladies swimming pool and the mixed 'slipper baths'.

I had friends who lived across the road from the school, Christine Ward, and Evelyn Barker, she went to Australia and I was heart broke. Other friends lived on Aberdeen street, and Clarence street.

I'm sorry if I'm rambling, I've only just started posting on the forum, its so lovely to read about old times.

I Parked my car in Wellington St yesterday and walked to Bramall Lane (not for the Football) so I thought I would take a bit of a detour and bore my wife with the sights of my childhood, or those that are left.

At the end of Wellington Street was where Graham Wathen lived. Past Milton Street where Richard Saunderson used to live. Then up Fitzwilliam Street to the old school. Pleased to say that it looks pretty much the same, with the exception of the "playground" next to it. John Ward lived across the road on Cavendish Street, and round the corner on Boston Street was where Miss Watson, my piano teacher, tried in vain to force some music into me. Obviously the houses opposite the school are no longer there, and the sweetshop was sadly missing.

At the top of Fitzwilliam Street, on Convent Walk, was where Rosalind Proctor, my first girlfriend lived. We were only 4 at the time so it's safe to assume that her taste in boys was pretty poor. I was in the cubs with her brother, Jonathan, and we spent many happy days bob-a-jobbing

Up Broomspring Lane and across the main road to where Steve Marshall used to live, and near to John Crookes' house on Filey Street. The old Hanover Methodist church building has gone and been replaced by a "modern" version.

Down Hanover street and passed the house of Joy Senior who was our cub mistress, then past the off licence where Joy Laxen lived. Almost next door was the St Silas church hall which was used to the Scout and Cub meetings. I seem to remember that the caretaker was Ron Wilson. Opposite was the Doctor's on Clarke Street. In those days I didn't go as often as I do now so I can't remember his name.

St. Silas church is still there but looking a bit sorry for itself. The clergy during my time there were Derek Hayward, Hugh Buckingham and Martin Phillips.

Down William Street to the Star pictures, and over the road to the Saspirella shop which have all now gone.

Hopefully some of those names and places might have triggered some memories. Please accept my apologies if this is a bit rambling, and especially if my memory has started to fail me after all these years.

Would love to hear any other memories of the area, and what happened to any of the people.

my mother was an usherette at the Star pictures I believe the shop on the opposite corner was called Gallons. I lived there till I was in my middle teens but can't recall any of the names you mentioned. On the other side of William st. I seem to remember the Sunnyside pub then a sweet shop, Shaws builders another sweet shop and a grocers after that my memory fails too
