Nice to hear from you again. I saw Barry last week they came to our place and we went out for lunch. They have just had their second great grandchild last week. Yes Brian Brookes did go cycling with us and we used to go to the Azena sometimes as he played drum there as well. Alan Stocks used to ride with us as well also Keith Pepper. Alan has been dead many years and we have lost contact with his wife Pam as she moved, she used to be a cyclist as well. Cheers xx

Don't know Jimmy Elwis, but a long while ago I asked in Expats if anyone remembered the monkey that use to be in a cage on Moore Street opposit where Richards of Sheffield cutlery was ( just before the roundabout ).

The cage was set into a brick wall and about 6 feet off the ground, it use to amuse the kids during the 60's.

Could this monkey have belonged to Jimmy Elwis ?

Hi John,

The monkey was located behind the chip shop which was on the corner of Young Street and Bishop Street. As you say it was quite high up which was a good thing as every child around spent time looking at it. If we had been able to reach it who knows what would have happened to the poor little thing. Can't have been much of a life for it. I lived not far away on Hurst Road. Btw Jimmy Elwes had nothing to do with the monkey. He was in our class at St. Silas.

Hello Grannypat,

I'm pleased that someone else remembers the monkey in the cage, ages ago I posted on here asking if anyone remembered it, people who had lived around that area disputed what I had said and implied that I was seeing things or making them up.

Anybody remember Eric Moles who had a monkey also Jimmy Elwis from the Clarence St area.

Hiya Jack,

You mentioned Jimmy Elwes. He was in my class at school so would be a little bit older than you. Did he live in the Clarence Street area? I thought he lived further up passed the school. His mum used to work at Wilson's snuff mill and, I think, left home for a waiter she met on holiday in Spain. That may be wrong but I was told that many years ago. The thing about gossip is that it loses nothing in the telling and like Chinese whispers it ends up being nothing like the original story.

Jimmy Elwis used to live across from the Vine pub, him and his friend used to push my brother David's head down the loo on many an occasion, the monkey though was not his.

Hello David

I have no idea what happened to anyone that you mentioned though I do remember some of the names. Richard Saunders, John Crookes, Neil Siddons. I've looked at some old pics on the Tapton Web Page, but didn't see anyone there. Have you tried that site? Good luck with the search. Sheil was my best friend for years but went on to Grammar School. I've tried many times to find her but without any luck. Hope you have more success. Have you ever been to any of the reunions? I tried one years ago, but again no success.

Ah yes - Mr Philbedge. Another violent teacher who hit me once across the back of my hand with the side of ruler. I had a bruise for weeks and my dad was ready to kill him. Not quite all 'good days' eh?

Well done you on passing the 11 plus. For someone who didn't manage that I also did OK as I went on to teach English............ Hope life has continued to treat you well. Take care Lynda

I remember doing arts and crafts at the playcentre then sneaking down the stairs for a look at the 'teens' doing their thing to all the pop records. That's where I learned to jive - by watching everyone else. Still enjoy a boogie.

Hiya

I remember Joan had a 'serious' boyfriend when she was at Tapton. In fact Joan 'escorted' me there on my very first day! My brother had a bit of thing with her sister Marie. Any idea where they are now?

Hi Lynda

I too remember Miss Hall and understand what you mean about the rice. She certainly had a strange mannerism that made it look like that, so it is certainly possible,

She always looked ancient to me so it's a little worrying that she was probably quite a bit younger than I am now.

I also remember a couple of the girls that you mentioned, Sheila Hempshall and Judith Hoodless.

The lads that I used to knock around with in those days were Tommy Radford,

Mick Johnson, Richard Saunderson, Steve Marshall, John Ward, John Crookes, Neil Siddons, and Alan Robertson. Would be intersted to hear if anyone knows what happened to any of them. Richard is the only one that I have had contact with since those days.

Are you sure her name wasn't Joan Hempshall as my name is Sheila and Joan was a great friend and I have been trying to find her. If I have the name right she married a Ricky Cater, there was also another friend who lived nearby called Christine Dawson. If anyone has any information on either or these women I would be pleased to hear it. My full name then was Sheila Smith.

Sheila,

I'm pretty sure that her name was Sheila. Perhaps some of the other contributors can let us know if they remember her

Hiya Jack,

No you didn't send me that photograph but I would love to have a copy so do please send it. Now both David Pegg and Raymond Price who were also in my class at school. Ray Price is the cousin of Albert Price who is on http://www.friendsreunited.co.uk so if you contact him there I'm sure he will put you in contact with Ray.

Yes, I can see that some of the people on this thread reply before reading the previous replies which complicates things but are you telling me that there were two monkeys both in the same area then (neither of which were owned by Jimmy Elwes). Jimmy Elwes HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH THE MONKEY!!!!!! Lets hope that put everbody straight once and for all Jack.

Are you keeping well. I do hope so. Lovely to be in contact again.

Hiya Jack,

I feel totally gutted to hear of Albert's passing which is strange as I haven't seen him in over half a century. We did exchange a few emails a couple of years ago about the people in our class at St. Silas and I still thought that he would be there if I wanted to ask him to delve once again into his memory banks and I never doubted that this would be the case. The world is a poorer place for his passing but heaven will be richer for his presence there. God bless him.
