Hi David,

Do you remember the bath cards we use to be able to get at Springfield - a card with a number of perforated squares, when you went to the baths they would tear one off and charge you sixpence entry fee ?

When I was at Springfield, each year the best boy and girl swimmer in the school would receive a free pass to be used in any swimming baths in Sheffield..... a girl called Sandra South won it one year and I was the boy who won it with her.

John

I had forgotten about the swimming cards but now you mention it they do ring a bell. Do you recall the swimming teacher that the school used. I think he was Mr Lyons and might have had a brother who also coached. Whoever he was he must have been more successful with you.

Hello Again David.

Although I have a reasonably good memory I can't remember the swimming teachers name. Do you remember the Headmaster and Headmistress - Mr.Mrs Holdsworth ?

On one ocassion Mrs Holdsworth took our class to Beauchief Abbey to do some brass rubbings, as she lived close-by she took us afterwards to her home where we all sat in the garden and she gave us orange juice. The playcentre - I remember it as if it was yesterday.....down in the bottom hall they had dancing to pop records, in the top hall they had Skittles you knock down with a swinging ball, snooker, needlework, drawing. I only lived around the corner from Springfield so it was ideal.

The Holdsworths were there when I attended springfield took my 11plus there and then to king teds. Which ,for a lad from a back to back on Victoria street, was a bit of a shock!

Hello Lynda

I certainly remember Mr Holdsworth. Although I quite liked him he still found a reason to cane me. it seemed harsh at the time but looking back after 50+ years, I probably deserved it.

I don't remember Mrs Holdsworth at all though, and certainly not as headmistress.

The other teachers that I recall were Miss Neice and Mr Philbedge (who got married while I was there) and Mr Harley.

As far as school trips are concerned the only one I had was a day trip to York

David

Hi Lynda

I too remember Miss Hall and understand what you mean about the rice. She certainly had a strange mannerism that made it look like that, so it is certainly possible,

She always looked ancient to me so it's a little worrying that she was probably quite a bit younger than I am now.

I also remember a couple of the girls that you mentioned, Sheila Hempshall and Judith Hoodless.

The lads that I used to knock around with in those days were Tommy Radford,

Mick Johnson, Richard Saunderson, Steve Marshall, John Ward, John Crookes, Neil Siddons, and Alan Robertson. Would be intersted to hear if anyone knows what happened to any of them. Richard is the only one that I have had contact with since those days.

Hello David

I have no idea what happened to anyone that you mentioned though I do remember some of the names. Richard Saunders, John Crookes, Neil Siddons. I've looked at some old pics on the Tapton Web Page, but didn't see anyone there. Have you tried that site? Good luck with the search. Sheil was my best friend for years but went on to Grammar School. I've tried many times to find her but without any luck. Hope you have more success. Have you ever been to any of the reunions? I tried one years ago, but again no success.

Ah yes - Mr Philbedge. Another violent teacher who hit me once across the back of my hand with the side of ruler. I had a bruise for weeks and my dad was ready to kill him. Not quite all 'good days' eh?

Well done you on passing the 11 plus. For someone who didn't manage that I also did OK as I went on to teach English............ Hope life has continued to treat you well. Take care Lynda

I remember doing arts and crafts at the playcentre then sneaking down the stairs for a look at the 'teens' doing their thing to all the pop records. That's where I learned to jive - by watching everyone else. Still enjoy a boogie.

Don't know Jimmy Elwis, but a long while ago I asked in Expats if anyone remembered the monkey that use to be in a cage on Moore Street opposit where Richards of Sheffield cutlery was ( just before the roundabout ).

The cage was set into a brick wall and about 6 feet off the ground, it use to amuse the kids during the 60's.

Could this monkey have belonged to Jimmy Elwis ?

Hello David T,

I too was at Springfield School and Miss Hall was my teacher - a very intimidating person who had the face of a bulldog chewing a wasp. she use to play the piano and had the boys and girls in our class dancing in the lower hall pretending to be tree's swaying in the wind.

I remember Judith Hoodless although she was a little older than me, her younger sister Janet was in my class. One of the names you mentioned: Steve Marshall - did he have a younger brother called Peter, if Yes, then I knew his brother well.

Hi John

I remember the monkey. I think it was at the bottom of Headford St, between the Moor and Moore St. I mentioned this on a website and was told I was wrong and that it was a parrot, so it's good to know that you saw it as well.

Unfortunately I never knew who's monkey it was so can't confirm the Jimmy Elwis theory.

Hiya Willybite I haven't been on the site for a long time but am back now. Good to see you are still on the site. Remember me Derek Ash? I have been looking at the site and reading the comments on Springfield School I remember most of the teacher especially Miss Hall as she was my first teacher at Springfield. I remember she made me stand on a chair because I said Missus instead of woman on a picture card. I never went to the baths because my brother George tried to drown me!!!!!!!!

Hiya

I also remember the maypole dancing and country dancing. Even remember sitting in the hall listening to the radio and having to sing along. Mr Holdsworth was head when I went to Springfield so maybe you'd left before I got there.

Cheers Lynda
