New Cinema on The Moor - Light

Recommended Posts

I wish I could find the artists impression of the new building as I could of sworn that at first floor level there looked to be an open terraced area looking out over the Moor which would hint at either an eatery or bar being part of the build. One other thing for all the doom and gloom merchants is the guy I spoke to at the city centre masterplan show did say that the new market was gaining a lot of attention from potential market stall holders and it looked to him that it would be completely full when open.

Odeon is a dive. That whole area is being redeveloped.

I welcome a new cinema on The Moor.

agree, odeon seems dirty and unfriendly, the bar's awful and rarely open and the quality of the screenings are poor - I wonder if it makes money, sheffield is well served with cinemas, but if someone wants tobuild a decent picture house and undercut centertainment a mile from me, I'm in.

I saw a drive thru ATM in Bridgeton Maine. It seemed oddly out of place there, because the town was beaut and seemed old-fashioned USA.

I watched Star Wars (2004) new one there in a drive in thing. I got there about 4 hours before it started thinking it was going to be packed. When it started there was us, and one other car. Still, I enjoyed it just for the experience. Going for a p!$$ wasn't pleasant though. Open type toilets and it was mosquitoarama.

never been to a drive in movie, doesn't watching a film thro' a greasy windscreen with a little speaker kinda ruin the experience? I thought it was just for teenagers to get jiggy.

It wont do very well whether its odeon or not. People prefer centertainment or meadowhall for the cinema normally.

Id rather watch movies in town, then having to head out to the middle of nowhere. As someone who lives in a driverless/carless household, its a hassle to go to those places to see a film.

The current mainstream theatre in town needs a massive overhaul. Last time I was at the odeon, we were served mouldy popcorn and the seats were uncomfortable. The screen was awful.

I adore the showroom, but wouldnt normally go there for escapism type of movie

Agree - even with parking it can work. Leeds have a cinema in The Light in the city centre, and another out near Kirkstall like Centertainment. Both work.

The key is attracting a food outlet to the Moor - Nandos or Pizza Express. Without the food the cinema will fail. The Moor needs to be transformed into a decent vibrant evening venue.

The plan is for a ten-screen cinema and six restaurants.

America doesn't really have high streets like we do though. Well they do but they aren't popular. There's more of a universal car culture over there.

My hometown has a large mainstreet, with lots of little strip malls off it. Filled with amazing restaurants who serve locally sourced food and everything.. Little independent clothing stores, bars and a 3 screen cinema.

The village does charge for its parking (in 15 minute intervals, as well), but its never put anyone off from going into town. If you give the people what they want, theyll visit no matter what

Yes there are drive up atms, but some people feel safer being in their car than parking, getting out and possibly being followed to be mugged. I only used them if I had to, as it was always a pain in the ass trying to stretch over the car door to reach the keypads

TGI Friday's or Hard Rock Cafe?

Hard Rock over TGI's, but Hard Rock will not touch Sheffield in a million years. The Hard Rock in Manchester is there because it is round the corner from the Arena.

TGI's is more a budget brand, suited to out of town places. If you look at Centertainment, the food places are loud and full of kids. Look at food places next to the Leeds cinema in the city centre, and they are a bit more classy. You have to market a city centre cinema as food, then film, then drinks at a bar then onto casino to end night with. All this needs to be within walking distance of each other.

Why six? If I was in charge of somewhere like Nando's why spend money on a site with 5 competitors?

Look at Nando's on Ecclesall Road, with Pizza Express they perfectly work together - people alternate where they go. A couple around the cinema yes, but 6 too many.

I was expecting that, but when you pay at the kiosk, they give you a piece of paper with a radio frequency on it, and you just tune in to it. Luckily I was in an decent hire car with an amazing sound system!

Certainly no jiggy in my car, I went with my brother.

I only really went just to say I'd been to one. I was very surprised no one was there. I wonder whether it would be popular with young ens here? Not sure really. More people have cars there at a young age, and it didn't pull the crowds in, perhaps only for novelty.

Nando's will not be competing with 5 competitors- they are chains and often owned by the same holding companies eg Nando's, Pizza Express, Gourmet Burger Kitchen and Real Greek are all the same company. The company leases the properties with agreements on what other businesses can rent.

The dated, unappealing, sterile out of town factory units are not attractive to the increasing number of city centre living spenders.

The business idea is to create a food and entertainment zone that competes with other zones like the increasingly popular London Road, Division Street and Eccleshall Road.

Although these new franchises do not usually allow independents to compete they are part of invigorating City Centres.

There are about 10 different restaurants at centertainment, aren't these all competing with each other?

It should be a cheap cinema that shows older films.

But it won't be.
