HELP Need advise on my 53 plate auto Vectra

Recommended Posts

Hi

I need some advise and would be grateful if anyone could help

I have a 53 plate Vectra automatic that keeps jumping in the gears it knocks into gear mostly in low gear seems fine in high gear, I was coming home from work earlier and my light came on the dash a image of a car and a spanner and then the car started to drive very slowly as if it was in one gear but was smooth ? I then pulled up and switched off the ignition and restarted it and was ok again?? although the jumping into gear was still there, I have been told it could be a number of things including transmission fluid but dont know how to check if it has enough in as there is no dipstick?? please can anyone advise me what to do I will take it to a garage for a look but do not know what garage to take it to I do not want ripping off:(

Thank You

Yea get it to a specialist with a code reader and hope it's not anything terminal.

Has it slowly been getting worse or has it started quite quick?

The auto-box in my friends Zafira slowly got more erratic with it's gear changes, randomly kicking down and stuff.

That turned out to be transmission fluid, although the Vauxhall main dealer told us the fluid was life-long and doesn't degrade :hihi:

Thanks for the mistergearbox link I hope It does not require a gearbox £850 is way out of my budget :(

Either:

Low gearbox oil level

Faulty Gearbox module/ecu

Moisture getting into the gearbox oil via rotten pipes.

Needs plugging into a tech2 machine at a vauxhall garage to check the module before anything, then either taking to a gearbox specialist or buying another gearbox.

before you take it anywhere check ATF level (auto trans fluid) should be in a collector bottle at back of engine bay. It should say ATF on it. if it has no dip stick with it,it should have a low and full mark on the outside of it. Take lid off look where level is and start engine, with engine running look at level again if its low top it up with ATF, don't overfill tho. then take for test drive see how it goes,if its still driving like a bag of spanners get a mechanic to clean the filter inside the gearbox.this is NOT a big job,its worth doing this as it is a common thing to happen as nobody bothers to check gearbox filter

My last employer had auto vans, every single one of them had problems with the gearbox. They garage didnt seem to know how to fix them, they would get repaired and then break down again, leaving them unable to drive.

that looks like excellent advice....

Either:

Low gearbox oil level

This is the very first thing to check. It may not be possible but if there is a dipstick for checking then this is the first thing to do. IF the oil is dark and toast smelling, or worse it smells burnt then you have a problem and need a full flush of the system. Also if it's ten years old and never had it's box oil changed, then it probably needs a change regardless. You must be VERY careful not to let them put Dexron 2 or 3 in, these oils will stuff the box quickly. Vauxhall boxes need a different fluid which is box dependant.
