Season Review 2012/13

Recommended Posts

Sheffield Forum started their season away to Shiregreen Athletic in a game that was to sum up their season in general. Twice Forum took the lead only to be held back to take just a point in the first game.

The following week we got our first win at High Green Rovers, coming away with a 4-2 win after a hard working display on High Green Playing Fields.

Defeat was tasted for the first time in the County Cup as we took on Everest on Handsworth Rec with a makeshift side. It was a hard one to take as with a fully fit team we felt we could have taken that game.

We got back to league action with a good 3 goal win and clean sheet against Chaucer on Parson Cross Park.

Then we had our first home game...bit of a derby against Wyvern on Herdings Park. 11 goals were scored in a highly entertaining game. Wyvern went 2 up before Forum pulled one back but it was 3-1 by half time. Forum then pulled it back to 3-3 before 3 goals in 8 minutes saw the score jump to 5-4 to Wyvern only for Forum to pull it back to 5-5. Wyvern though snatched a late decisive goal.

After such a disappointment from all the effort put in, we faced Holly Bush away and took a 2 goal lead into the break but again couldn't hold on and somehow crumbled in the second half as Holly Bush beat us 4-2!

On to Manor Social, second home game for us and this was another thriller but we ended on the wrong side of the scoreline again. Forum took an early lead but Manor equalised. Manor then took a controversial lead from a free kick whilst the keeper was seeing to his gloves, the referee blew allowing Manor to score an easy free kick. Forum then score 3 times in the last 5 minutes of the first half to give a 4-2 lead at half time but a second half crumble saw Forum go down 5-4.

Forum looked to sort out the leaking of goals and put that right with a 3-1 win against Rose House followed by a 6-2 defeat of High Green Rovers back on Herdings. We then went past KnowHow CC in the cup with a 3-1 away win only to lose the following league game to Shiregreen. This was the first game all season Forum failed to score in but managed to come back to draw against Titans. Again, Forum took the lead in this game and held on only to concede with 10 minutes remaining.

Rose House were next up and Forum led at half time by 2 goals to nil and this time kept it and went on to win 6-1. Forum then met Wheel Athletic in the cup and came out 11-3 winners with ease.

Bad weather then set in and it was a month until Forum played again. It was in the next round of the cup for a quarter final spot. Forum went down 2-1 away to Wincobank Forum after leading at half time. The following week we won 2-1 at Holly Bush before struggling for a team against Manor Social. Midfielders had to cover in defence and it showed as we suffered our heaviest defeat, 7-1 against the eventual champions.

Forum came back from that hard game to beat Smithywood 5-2 at home before bad weather and weekends with no fixtures left Forum with no game for another 5 weeks before playing their final games.

A defeat to Wyvern started off a poor end to the season but gained a point at home to Chaucer. Forum again led in the first minute only to be pegged back. Following that, Titans came to Herdings and Forum took the lead before losing their top scorer Daniel Sheedy and 2 other players carrying on due to lack of subs. Forum lost their lead and ended up losing 4-2 and lost the final game of the season at Smithywood with another makeshift side.

It was a decent start but poor end for Forum who struggled to hold onto a lead through the season, something which will be looked at pre season.

In the end though it turned out to be an average season with Sheffield Forum finishing mid table in 6th. Our end of season party at Bar 27 saw the awards given out for top goalscorer, managers and players player, most improved etc. All the photos can be seen HERE!

Managers Player - Shane Middlebrook

Never gave up no matter what, could be seen all over the pitch at times and his effort and work rate could not be matched!

Players Player - Shane Middlebrook

The captain was noticed by his team mates for the effort and commitment he gives to the team. He also had a good first season up front scoring 18 times. A well deserved award!

Top Goal Scorer - Daniel Sheedy

Sheedy has won this award 3 times in a row now but this was by far the most impressive. He scored 21 goals in all competitions and was pushed all the way by Middlebrook.

Most Improved - Eifion Griffiths

Eifion joined in the summer as a right back but changed to centre back. He began on the bench for the first game but soon as he got his chance, he took it with both hands and has become an important member of the team. His composure on the ball, reading of the game and ability led to him receiving this award following a quiet pre season.

Most Man of the Match - Jason Bowden

Jay again was an important member of the defence. The votes for this award was pretty level throughout the season but impressive games at the back end of the season saw Jason take the award.

Clubman - Shane Middlebrook and Shaun Baugh

Shane received this award for all the work he does off the pitch. Getting players sorted for training and game, giving lifts and dealing with other people is more than what is expected of a player but Shane takes this in his stride.

Shaun ran pre-season and training throughout the season trying to build the team up as well as helping as an assistant manager. His effort didn't go unrecognised and we wish Shaun well with Athletico Forum.

Sheffield Forum FC also won the Sheffield Imperial Sunday League Division 2 Fair Play Award for this season

So...onto season 2013/14 with the support of SheffieldForum.co.uk we are ready for the new season. We are moving home pitch to Shirecliffe Heliport and have a couple of new players. A lot have or will be leaving and recruitment has started with pre-season due to start in mid June. The divisions have not been set as yet for the league so we can only assume we will be division 2 next season. Due to the award, we should be taking part in the Invitation Cup next season!

Either way, we will be well prepared and ready to go in September!!
