Changes to Sheffield Council's Housing Lettings Policy

Recommended Posts

I think, the lack of housing in this country is wrong. Why cant the government set up a building company and any profits it makes go into the nhs.

That is a good idea. The answer is "it could." Unfortunately, it isn't the sort of thing that people in government want to do.

Its should be some ones responsibility to look into things like that. i guess its the home secretary. But if she cant get round to sorting it out, then they should make a new post in the cabinet. Maybe call it "Housing Minister" and their sole purpose could be to sort out the housing situation in this country.

The Govt. Has spent decades convincing people they have to owe the banks hundreds of thousands of pounds in order to not be classed as 'in need'.

Its only recently that council property has been labeled as 'social housing' to make it sound abhorrent to those trying to better themselves by getting into a lifetime of debt.

In the 1970's in Sheffield for every one private build, three council properties were built.

But there is more profit in mortgages/buying banks using tax payers money / selling shares in same banks to themselves, than there ever will be in housing people.

Council housing has been reducing in numbers for a long time. In the seventies the way it was allocated was changing, from people waiting to get to the top of the list to prioritising 'need'. Also demand reduced once lots of ordinary folk decided to be owner occupiers. We decided to buy in the seventies and although it wasn't always easy, we're in a better position now as pensioners with no rent to pay.

in most places, the best/most desirable properties were sold to tenants through Right to Buy, (some of us weren't so lucky!) but there are still available council properties for rent in Sheffield, and in many other northern towns.

The term 'social housing' refers to any not for profit landlord, and includes housing associations as well as local authorities.

Sheffield Housing Company is building new homes, some of which are for rent. Some info here: https://www.sheffield.gov.uk/dms/scc/management/corporate-communications/documents/housing/neighbourhoods/better-neighbourhoods/SHC-News--November-2015/SHC%20News-%20November%202015.pdf

The housing shortage we hear about isn't acute here unlike London and the south.
