Issues in Page Hall/Firth Park

Recommended Posts

perhaps maybe talking to the local businesses where this waste begins its journey might be a better starting point - the council will be no help - their stock excuse for everything is the govt cuts.

Poor Ali - I applaud your efforts to try and get something done. I bet you didn't realise the extent of negativity you would receive from posters on here.

I am so upset to see the rubbish piling up in my area everyday and yes I do live in Firth Park and drive through Page Hall everyday. Outside the shop on Hinde house crescent, the pavements are clean when I leave for work and littered with drinks bottles, crisp packets etc etc, as well as the dumping, on my way home. It literally makes me cry.

This is how I tackled it with the roma family who moved in next door. I wrote a polite message and then translated it into slovak on google translate and put it through their door. When they came out to remove the food waste left around, I smiled and said thank you. I have continued to write messages translating to slovak on the internet for a few months and it is now much better.

A few months ago I called the Pakistani advice centre to see if they had any of the booklets for the roma on 'living in england'. It's just about new arrivals learning what the norms and customs are here and what is and is not acceptable. They didn't have any but I told the lady who answered the phone of the website. Not sure if they got any.

These two publications do exist (in Slovak lang) but I don't know if they are being distributed. I am going to take it on myself to try and obtain some copies of the 2nd one (see links below), and will try to come to the meeting Ali. If the booklets have to be paid for I will approach the Cllrs.

I think the page hall clean up will be a good idea and we need all the community to get involved. publicity materials should also be translated into slovak (quite easy if you use simple language on google translate).

Booklets can be given out and people encouraged to take part.

I am willing to give it some time....but my patience is wearing thin as I cannot sell my house, and a potential buyer told me it was because they did not want to live next door to my neighbours. While I strongly believe in integration - the problems associated with new people arriving is now causing me upset and unhappiness.

I was told my someone at a meeting that the sudden influx to Page Hall/Firth Park of Roma Slovak is because "the Asian community kicked them out of Tinsley". Whatever the truth we all need to work together. When a community is used to socialising in large groups, they don't necessarily realise other people find that threatening.

Keep trying Ali. I know there are other good people in Fir Vale/Firth Park/Page Hall such the Fir Vale TARA, if it still exists, Friends of Firth Park etc, maybe they too can be invited to the litter pick day, and it might make a difference if there's lots of people, together, and encouraging those who are new to take part too.

I think what you're suggesting will train the "dogs" in question to regard the existing community as their free binmen. Shaming the Roma into not polluting their current location with debris by cleaning up after them is highly unlikely to work. Where they go crime and filth immediately follows. The countries they have come from haven't managed to solve the problem for hundreds of years so the idea a bit of a litter pick will change centuries old ingrained attitudes among them is a tad optimistic.

Given that the Roma come from as wide and differing countries such as Bulgaria and the former Czech Republic that's a very sweeping statement.

Hi all

I'm approached by a number of residents in Firth Park/Page Hall regarding the litter and other matters.

I have asked the local counsellors to meet with us and was advised their is a local meeting 1st Thursday every month at Pakistan advice centre at 6pm.

I would appreciate it if anybody has the time to attend on the 6th June to show support that we are fed up with the constant litter in Page Hall and Firth Park. I will be asking for weekly black bin collections again as the litter problem seems to have evolved since bins were collected twice a week.

If there is anything else residents wish to talk about, please email me at hussain.legaljustice@gmail.com. Please do out page hall issues in the subject box to enable me to identify emails relating to this topic. I rarely go onto this site but will be checking it again before the meeting.

Many thanks in advance.

Ali.

I was brought up in that area (fir view gardens) back in the 90's it was a nice place to live then but these days it's a different story...nobody gives 2 hoots anymore...the area has lost it's identity...i'm not a racist but it seems to be since the area became a "multi racial" area...my parents and grandparents lived around there and would turn in there graves if they could see the state it's in now

We are off topic now.

My last words on this. Andy I understand you are upset but one day you will die and see the illusions you live in. Including those of what is good and what is bad.

These eastern Europeans are very friendly. They try hard to connect. They say good afternoon as you pass them. They do look at what is around them but it is all new and strange to them.

They don't understand a lot of it and need time and HELP ASSISTANCE to learn more faster.

When someone has a lot of negative or repressed energy in them you can feel that when you stand near them waiting for a bus or in line at a store or GP.

These romas don't have that negative energy. In some ways they are more in touch with life than some repressed UK people are.

By standing at a far distance moaning about the mess you have not addressed the real problem.

This is what I mean. A little effort does a lot more good than whining and complaining.

If one area is going to get weekly collections, then can we all have them please?

Or perhaps the residents there need to learn not to chuck rubbish all over the ground, like everyone else manages to do so?

Weekly collections wouldn't stop people throwing litter about in the street anyway, from the sounds of it the problem isn't household waste but rubbish from cars and outside shops.

Anyone been up east bank rd lately? It is a disgrace from top to bottom, no one can blame Asians round there though can they?

all im gonna say on the matter is if ANYONE goes to DORE during the day they get street cleaners,im a taxi driver and see this in most of the areas surrounding dore, ive lived in s9 most of my life and realise that the council, like it or not help the more affluent areas in sheffield more than any deprived area.. sorry but i see this daily!!

Best point i`ve seen on this issue so far. You will not see daily litter picks on Manor, Darnall, Burngreave or Highfields but you will in Totley and Dore.

Try educating the people that live there that Litter goes in a bin and peeing in the street as I saw someone doing not less than an hour ago ...............Oh and yes I have moved out but have family there I have to travel through there clean up your own mess and don't expect the rest of Sheffield to sort it out for you ..........................x
What `s that?

A man peed in the street?

---------- Post added 28-05-2013 at 20:20 ----------

Spot on, but they'll just ignore the fines and litter anyway. Take a look at the integrated housing projects the Czechs tried with Roma and Czechs living together. The Roma made the Czechs lives hell, the Czechs moved out and the Roma stripped the buildings of anything they could sell and left hundreds of tons of waste (including dozens of tons of human waste) behind when they'd finally stolen everything they could sell.

God help us all when they can come en masse next year.

Andy.

With respect.....have your political views altered? You never used to be so anti immigrant as you are now. What went on with Czechs and so called Roma? And how come you learned of it all?

---------- Post added 28-05-2013 at 20:24 ----------

I think the OP should be applauded for trying to do something about the problem...well done Ali :)

It isn't just a Page Hall and Firth Park problem though, most of Sheffield has a big litter problem imo. People need to respect their enviornment, too many people happy to live in their own filth. I was brought up to never drop litter and I teach my own kids to keep hold of litter in their pockets until they see a bin, and if I did ever see my own kids drop litter, I'd make them pick it up.

Well said. But when i put a thread on here about the cesspit known as east bank rd, people here told me to chill out. Litter is ok if it is not Asian litter it appears.

I don't live on Page hall, but I took part in a litter pick on Margate Drive a couple of years ago.

None of the rubbish dropped around there was anythng to do with me or anyone I know, but we cleared about 20 -25 sacks of litter between us in a couple of hours.

We've done this in various areas, including Heeley, Sharrow, and Granville Road.

In some areas (like Margate Drive, and Granville road) residents came out to help us, others brought us cups of tea, by way of thanks.

It was good to know that we were making a difference to that area.

happy h

how do you find out about these litter cleanups?

and please empty your inbox as i have twice wanted to pm you but could not.

thanks

I'm not blaming anyone apart from the people that live there and are making the mess - race is irrelevant and wasn't something I raised.

Dirty people come from all walks of life and all cultures, so you can get off the horse now.

Manor Top is litter picked and swept every morning around 8:30 by a chap in a hi-vis vest. He's been doing it for years, and faces heckling and people throwing rubbish on the ground in front of him on a daily basis. Every few weeks a motorised sweeper/cleaner thing does the area as well.

Salaam Aleikum, Ali,

Have you thought about asking your local mosques to get together and do a litter-pick after Jummah prayers, on a Friday, perhaps? (for those who can attend) the Mosque I attend does this, in the area surrounding it.

What about making it a regular community "thing" and get the youngsters to join in, and sow into them the mindset of taking responsibility for their area, and encouraging them to have a positive effect?

Streetforce lend safety equipment such as gloves and grabber-sticks to pick up the litter with. They will also liaise with the organiser, be it the Imam, there, the elders, or whoever takes charge, to collect the bags of rubbish filled up by the collectors.

There's safety tips, given, too, like "use the "grabbers", especially if there's a pile of rubbish, and you can't see if there are any syringes or glass in the pile of garbage.

This is a really good idea, I thought more would jump on it and say lets arange something,

Afew years ago in Rotherham, they did this afew times in Brinsworth ( should have kept it going ) and did pretty well, it did not cure the original problem, but the streets looked clean most of the time,

On one occasion, the asian community booked the cummunity centre off bawtry road, there was food and people there too talk to, they basically set it up and ran it, i met afew and had a chat ( great way to break the ice ( no booze )) ( i like a drink sometimes )

If some on here reads Plain Talker's post, start with litter picks, and then start to rebuild community through those meetings at community centers, it might get better, but it needs more than just the asains, i will have a walk down and help if some one lets me know a time and date

I have just emailed this request to

Ibrar Hussain, Talib Hussain, Jackie Drayton, Alison Rayner (North East Assembly), the local Police, Environmental Services, Parking Services, the Local Slovak Liaison and cced it to David Blunkett.

"Hi

I really do suggest that as many of you can attend the meeting this month as there has been a lot of unrest amongst residents recently with regards to litter and disturbance, particularly on the Sheffield Forum website. This has been from local residents and worryingly, from people outside the area. Page Hall is quickly being considered a ghetto and I firmly believe something needs to be done to address this negative image, both for the residents, the incoming migrants and especially for Sheffield's image as a City of Sanctuary, which quite frankly, most people think is a joke.

Attached are threads which I urge you to review.

I look forward to discussing this subject."
