Sheffieldish - words & phrases

I now live in Orkney and always thought my Sheffield accent had almost vanished but new people I meet often immediately identify where I come from. Many locals and a lot of people from south of Watford still can not understand half of what I say.

One that still springs to mind when it gets cold and likely to snow is "th's a cold wind up Wicker Arches"

Women used to watch whether a new neighbour 'pegged arrt' if she did it was a sign of being one of them, if she didn't it meant her washing weren't up to much and she were ashamed of hanging it out (or didn't wash that often!)

Hello.

Heeley is where my husband was brought up.

Lived next door , or a few doors down from Taggies ice cream.

I feel sure his Mum, my Mum -in-law, told me they could have a bath every week for a few pence at Taggies, their house being the only one on the road with a bathroom.
