Sheffieldish - words & phrases

Recommended Posts

I now live in Orkney and always thought my Sheffield accent had almost vanished but new people I meet often immediately identify where I come from. Many locals and a lot of people from south of Watford still can not understand half of what I say.

One that still springs to mind when it gets cold and likely to snow is "th's a cold wind up Wicker Arches"

Women used to watch whether a new neighbour 'pegged arrt' if she did it was a sign of being one of them, if she didn't it meant her washing weren't up to much and she were ashamed of hanging it out (or didn't wash that often!) :hihi:

Hello.

Heeley is where my husband was brought up.

Lived next door , or a few doors down from Taggies ice cream.

I feel sure his Mum, my Mum -in-law, told me they could have a bath every week for a few pence at Taggies, their house being the only one on the road with a bathroom.

Sorry if I am going off the subject but noticed a few names familiar to me.
