sorry i got that one wrong looking at your name rooney my grand mother was called rooney but i never knew her she died when i was 1yr she married my grandad walt aspland of coleridge road sheffield my name then was irene aspland

Gerra wesh, yer as black as fire back = get a wash you are as dirty as the back of the fireplace

Yer cud dig tatties in them ears = your ears are that dirty you could grow potatoes in them

Clout was a useful word.

 

Dish clout = dishcloth

 

Clouts = bedding, as in washing t' clouts

 

Clouts = underwear, as in "ne'r cast a clout 'till may be out"

 

And of course

 

Clout = punch or slap

Our old lad used to say"It,s all my eye and Peggy Martin!"when something didn,t sound true or feasible!.I never did find out who Peggy Martin was!.

Poe..... a large pot with a handle, usually kept under the bed in the days of the outside toilet...

My favourite is supwidee? I think it is purely a Sheffield speciality. My dad would reply "I'll supwidee any time". :)
